Who won the ratings race: Fox News or Donald Trump?
CNN ^ | January 29, 2016

Donald Trump counter-programmed Thursday's GOP primary debate on Fox with his own prime time event. So whose show scored a bigger audience?

Answer: Fox's debate. But it was the second lowest rated debate of the season. So Trump is certain to take credit for hurting the channel's total viewership.

Fox News Channel's Trump-less debate had an 8.4 household rating, according to early Nielsen data from so-called metered markets.

This means 8.4% of American metered market homes with TV sets were watching the face-off.

By comparison, two of the cable channels that showed parts of Trump's event, CNN and MSNBC, had about a quarter of Fox's audience combined.

So Trump's rivals clearly came out ahead in the raw ratings.

The most recent GOP debate, televised two weeks ago on the harder-to-find Fox Business Network, had a household rating of 7.4.

So Thursday's debate was bigger -- but not by much. The other five GOP debates of the cycle have had household ratings ranging from 8.9 to 15.9.

He has principles and stood by them. He will not succumb to Trump. Trump will not run Fox.

And all of this could have been avoided if Fox had been smart and not derided Trump and chosen someone other than Megyn Kelly. Why couldn’t Greta, Hannity or O’Reilly gone on? But no they had to pick Kelly, who has a serious beef with Trump.

It was start to finish on c-span.

Is that in the mix?

The debate was only on fox, but if you change channels it was on at least three at any moment in time.

Trump also dominated the news for the last 72 and going hours.

I really can’t tolerate theb TV ‘talking heads’; why I gave up on Cable and Network news in 2009. They drive me to distraction regardless of what topic they’re blabbing about. I watched Trump event last night on the computer/C-Span.

Not exactly the result Trump was hoping for. Intelligent people are figuring out that Trump is just a blowhard.

Intelligent people were watching the Trump show honoring the Vets. It was a lovely evening instead of an irritating evening which from the replays I’ve seen was typical scrambled Fox.

CNN covered only the first few minutes. Once it was obviously going well, they dropped the sound and their talking heads took turns boring everyone to death.

That makes it not a CNN vs FOX but a question of how much damage did Trump do to FOX by not showing. It appears to be significant.

Thank you Roger Ailes & Megyn Kelly....you both did a magnificent Job of destroying th FNC brand name overnight!!! What buffoons!!!

How many of these "intelligent people" have raised $6 million (and counting) for Veterans in less than 24 hours?

Ailes was caught in a position where he couldn’t back down from his malicious intent. There are no innocents in this situation, except perhaps the voters.

Yes but what if Trump skips the next one? I’ll bet the ratings will be horrible considering how bad last night’s debate was.

Plus the whole Trump/Fox kerfuffle still got people watching the debate to see how they handled things without him and how Megyn Kelly appeared. There was tons of publicity for the Fox debate because of Trump.

I watched the whole thing from beginning to end on OAN with no talking heads in between and no commercials. I don’t think they were even counted in the ratings.
