The wife of an American pastor who was imprisoned for nearly four years in Iran filed court documents to legally separate from him the same day he returned home to Idaho, court records show.

Saeed Abedini was one of four Americans released in Iran under a negotiated prisoner exchange on Jan. 16. The U.S. agreed to free seven Iranians as part of the agreement.

Panahi was a tireless advocate for her husband's release until November, when she told supporters that he had been an abusive husband..

She was indeed a tireless advocate, didn't see this turn of events coming at all.

Panahi said she hopes counseling will help resolve the marital problems.

I certainly hope so too.

I would wonder why she gave two hoots about an abusive husband. Is there a new love in her life? Just wondering.

Perhaps a form of Stockholm syndrome where the pastor took on some of the traits/habits/behaviors of his captors?

Perhaps he was reconditioned or 'brainwashed'?

I agree but there are several media corroborations to this story.

Stay tuned.

Apparently this alleged abuse took place before he lived in Iran.

And believe me, I hope they can reconcile!

Hopefully, the obviously much needed counseling will make a difference in their relationship.

She has been a tireless advocate for Saeed's release and for her sweet daughters' need for a full-time dad.

this is probably a case of not kicking her husband while he is down. I am sure he is devastated by the divorce but imagine if she chose to do it while he was a prisoner. divorce is never good but we really don’t know what there marriage was like before he was taken by the Iranians and it really is not our business now. all we can do is pray that god helps them sort it all out.

Supposedly sexual and physical abuse and addiction to porn. Read about it a while ago.

Not the first abusive wife to live with it...until there was an opportunity to get the hell out.....though she said they were going for therapy.

It’s possible to be a tireless advocate while you get tired of waiting and move on to someone else. Sounds like that’s what she did.

Franklin Graham posted this on his FB page today:

I was one of millions of people around the world praying for the release of Saeed Abedini, the American pastor imprisoned in Iran for his Christian faith. It was an honor to finally be able to meet him last week. This young man has spent 3 1/2 years of his life in jail for his faith, where he was beaten and tortured.

While we rejoice at his new freedom, we now lift him and his wife Naghmeh to the Lord for healing in their marriage. Other than God, no one knows the details and the truth of what has happened between Saeed and Naghmeh except them. There’s an old saying that there are at least two sides to every story. I can tell one thing for sure—not everything that has been reported in the media is true.

As a minister of the Gospel, I have tried to be a friend to both and to assist them in getting Saeed home and in getting access to any help that they may need. Clearly, there is a great need for prayer for their relationship and their family. God has answered prayer by bringing about Saeed’s release from prison, and now, Satan would like nothing more than to continue to destroy their lives. It is my prayer that this will not happen.

Divorce hasn't been mentioned, only counseling for reconciliation.

I wish them well.

Every indication we’ve had during his captivity is he is a Godly man....

.....and I’m sure Franklin Graham wouldn ‘t have pursued his release so vigorously if this were not true.

Something is very very wrong.

The Idaho Falls radio show read the whole statement she made this morning. They were gobsmacked. Who saw this coming was about all they could say.
