I had some liberal twit try and tell me the Second Amendment was all about having militias in the slave states because slaves outnumbered citizens by 10 to 1.

In the Southern states of the USA, only a small proportion of white families owned slaves, and even then the average ownership was small (about four or five). Those were mainly house servants, and essentially lived very close to their whites.
It is often mentioned that states forbade teaching slaves to read, which is technically true. But in practice, many slaves were at least partly literate, taught by their owners, or sometimes learning by themselves or from other slaves.
Thomas W. Dixon wrote in his autobiography that in old Virginia one of the family servants would go hunting for rabbits, using his own rifle.
It is, however, an historical fact that gun control laws were enacted in the South by Democrats after reconstruction to prevent freed slaves from defending themselves against the KKK arm of the Democrat party.
I hope you told him that the first gun control laws were enacted to keep guns out of the hands of slaves so they couldn’t revolt.

I was listening to the mayor of Memphis (I think it was a little while back) talking about race and how black lives don’t have value, and he cited the Three-fifths Compromise as an institutional example of how black lives mean less than white lives.
I swear, I have heard people like him before, but you would think even brainless-ninny racists would take the time to understand the context and reality of that particular reference.
