MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says he will not attend a debate scheduled for Thursday night in Des Moines, an unexpected twist just days before voters here launch the election process.
"I probably won't be doing the debate. I'm going to have something else in Iowa," he said during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
After the press conference, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski confirmed to The Washington Post that Trump would "definitely not" participate in Thursday's Fox News debate.
"He's definitely not participating in the Fox News debate," Lewandowski said. "His word is his bond."
He said Trump would remain in Iowa as planned and would instead host an event in the state to raise money for wounded warriors and other veterans groups.
Trump has made such threats before, but he said that the Fox News Channel, which is hosting the debate Thursday night, had gone too far by issuing press statements on Tuesday that he said mocked his concern about Megyn Kelly, one of the debate co-moderators.
"They're dealing with someone who's a little bit different. They can't toy with me like they toy with everybody else," he added.
When Trump saw the press release from Fox, "I said, 'Bye bye,'" he said.
Trump said his event on Thursday will benefit military veterans and service members wounded in war.

The faux trio of debate moderators at Fox are scrambling to re-compose the hit questions for Thursday night. Every question will center around “what do you think of Trump’s position on............................? BORING
Trump can handle anything Cruz has to say,,and it’s not a given the so-called moderators would give him a chance to respond in the ‘debate’ anyway.
Trump can respond through the media outlets.
They can report any ratings they want to report. Who’s going to challenge them?
Der Hildebeast has done a fashion makeover to boost ratings in her next "Town Hall":
I completely agree! No politician should need FOX,,and Trump surely doesn’t.
You’re too funny. Roger Ailes just lost $100 million dollars by putting out a retarded press release. DUMB Roger. Chess much?
See post #12.
A real piece of trash from Ailes or one of his flunkies.
It’s not about handling Fox. That’s how the media has always manipulated the GOP candidates.
It’s about throwing down the gauntlet and sticking to your guns.
Some would call that being “strong”
Fox is making $$$$$ off Trump. Why should he allow them to do that?
Me too, even youtube, no thanks fox.
Trump bought off who?
“This might actually affect his poll numbers negatively. That is a good thing.”
Nah.
Something tells me he’ll get by and FNC will do just fine. Maybe Trust Fund Donnie can do a Town Hall on MSNBC where he can tell them all how much he loves Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer again.
Hank
After Fox’s press release Trump would be a fool to show up. His choices were show up and be slammed like a bastard step child or tell them to stick it. He told them to stick it. Now I wonder what Fox will say.
I only hope fox sticks to using Megyn for this and doesn’t give in to trump. As someone who supports Trump I didn’t want this debate. It’s at least one too many and just an opportunity to try and kill him off politically (good luck).
hypocrites, eh?
Trump is playing power politics and laying it on the line.
For those who bitch about “Oh lord, how will he deal with Putin??!!”
Wellllll...
Like this. Play by my rules or go take a hike. We’ll see then how far Putin and others of his ilk want to take it.
Not likely. I cheered. Why the heck should he show up? He's ahead. Everyone there is going to go all out against him. FOX will have it out for him. And if he goes on he gives them huge ratings with no benefits. Smart move to do an alternate event that will probably outpull the debate now.
I have now read it 5 times and I still can’t believe that it originated for any firm with more than 5 employees. It is breathtakingly amateurish and snarky in such a way it is obvious that Trump resides in Fox execs noggins.
