No, Cruz was brilliant in working with Donald to clear the field so that only two non-establishment candidates remained: Cruz and Trump.
That was the deal.
It worked.
Now, they come to the part where they have to take on each other. As planned.

Ted Cruz will outsmart the Donald every time. Donald Trump has the temperament of Sonny in the Godfather. Every time anything happens not to his liking he flies off the handle and rushes off in a huff. Not a good personality to have for politics...or the mafia.
Cruz is astute enough to gauge how fed up conservative Republicans are. He knew he had some blemishes to work through. So, he developed a friendly relationship with Trump while the others were hostile. And Cruz drafted off Trump's appeal
He assumed Trump would fail or get bored, and he, Cruz, would inherit Trump's support. But Trump didn't drop out, and Cruz had to break loose.
But Trump was ready with lots of research. Maybe he never totally trusted Cruz to begin with.
