Late Thursday night, the National Review, the storied conservative magazine founded by William F. Buckley, published an issue denouncing Donald Trump.
"Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones," the editors wrote. "Donald Trump is a menace to American conservatism who would take the work of generations and trample it underfoot in behalf of a populism as heedless and crude as the Donald himself."
The Republican National Committee reacted swiftly - immediately revoking the permission it had given National Review to host a Republican presidential debate next month. "Tonight, a top official with the RNC called me to say that National Review was being disinvited," the magazine's publisher wrote online. "The reason: Our 'Against Trump' editorial."
That soft flapping sound you hear is the Grand Old Party waving the flag of surrender to Trump. Party elites - what's left of the now-derided "establishment" - are acquiescing to the once inconceivable: that a xenophobic and bigoted showman is now the face of the Republican Party and of American conservatism.

No proof they weren’t supporting him all along.
“I had been confident that Republican primary voters would reject Trump. I still think they would, if given the chance. But they haven’t been given a clear alternative. Because of Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, John Kasich and the others selfishly refusing to unite behind any one of them, the anti-Trump vote has been scattered.”
“If, in future years, Republicans and conservatives are called to explain how Trump happened, they might recall this: Good people could have stopped him, but they didn’t.”
Dana MILBANK???!?
The UberLiberal Propaganda Minister, giving US advice on CONSERVATISM???!?
Suck it, Dana.
It would serve as karma for what I’ve had to endure from the Republican nominee all these years since Reagan.
They have no choice. The GOP Etablishment will be able to work with Trump far easier than Cruz.
Well Trump is not a Conservative that’s for sure!!
Dana Milbank the liberal concern troll.
I’m waiting for him to eat his Trump column should Trump win IA and NH.
After bringing this country to the brink of ruin, liberals are beside themselves over Trump’s towering over the landscape.
Oh my!
Given that the NR despises both Cruz and Trump, and endorse the cucks ¿Yeb? and Rube-o, they should be known as the world’s foremost Menshevist magazine, not conservative. I hope their editors enjoy Hellfire.
There is a wild card in all this. Trump is pulling support from the "mad as hell" element in the base, which likes his bellicosity and seems willing to gamble that his political makeover is genuine. But he is also garnering significant support from non-traditional voters, including crossovers. These voters are more liberal that the GOP base. They seem attracted by Trump's star quality and, again, his bellicosity. But whether they will actually show up in a Republican primary remains to be seen.
Trump has said a dozen things that would have utterly destroyed any other candidate (and that will probably end up destroying him in the general election, when the press goes into full attack mode). The NR editors dislike his carelessness, his crudeness, and his obvious lack of knowledge on most issues. And they doubt that his recent political makeover is anything other than opportunism. YMMV, but these are reasonable concerns. Trump is not the only conservative in the race, and a couple of the others actually know what they are talking about, and don't have to rely on insults and boasting to fill the dead air time.
I recall the NY Times endorsing John McCain for the GOP nomination ... just before smearing him with the sex-with-lobbyist rumor as the general election campaign got started. Liberal pundits give such great advice to conservatives about what we should do ... if we were liberals like them!
I am sure that there would be conservatives to return the favor, if there were as many in the media as there are liberals. Even then though, conservatives still seem more mannerly than these rabid libdiots of the MSM!
Trump isn’t running as a conservative.
Conservatism is fine, separate from Trump.
Does that mean that they are now demonstrating how they are really slack-jawed, open-mouth air breathers?
Sucks to be you Dana.
But they havenât been given a clear alternative. Because of Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, John Kasich and the others selfishly refusing to unite behind any one of them, the anti-Trump vote has been scattered.â
If Trump is getting 40% in national polling, that means that 60% is anti Trump?
If so and by the same logic, Cruz getting 25% means that 75% are anti Cruz.
