It's one thing to publish an editorial denouncing Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump; any news outlet can do that, and plenty have. It's another to get almost two dozen leading conservative thinkers to write essays arguing against the Manhattan billionaire's nomination and agree to print them under a single banner: "Against Trump."
That's what the National Review and its editor, Rich Lowry, just pulled off. Lowry spoke with The Fix about how the special issue came together, what he hopes it will accomplish and the price that the conservative magazine was willing to pay in its relationship with the Republican National Committee, which has removed the magazine as co-sponsor of a debate in response to this issue.

In this case, thumb suckers.
That is jaw dropping. It amazes me that it ALWAYS comes back to money. At my age I know it to be true yet still get blindsided by that reality. Arrrgggg
Thank you for that information, it certainly fills in a lot of holes doesn’t it? Though I’ve long since given up on Beck, I will never get over him trashing Sarah, who clearly understands exactly what is going on here.
I’ll sit back and read the Cruz fans many tortured reasons for this - it should prove to be entertaining, though not in the way I prefer.
Thank you again
You’re welcome. I have learned this election season finally - follow the money.
An appeal to authority is not an intellectual argument.
If that great conservative intellectual Glenn Beck is involved then it must be legit!
Pavlich looks like a ditz.
Bozell is drifitng off into space...
Guess you used all of your intelligence to shoot down their arguments.
Thanks so much for the intelligent analysis.
And yet all of them look better than you. People who are supporting Trump really shouldn’t critize how other people look.
What’s truly interesting to me is that it takes 20+ big mouths to defend Cruz? It takes as many to slay Trump?
Some big big big secrets are being hidden and I cannot wait for them to be revealed.
This wasn’t fact finding as much as it was opinions voiced. They look like the ultimate elites protecting their turf.
I know both the Trumper and the Cruzer have been at each other. I hope we get what is best for America and I think both sides do. I don’t blame Cruz for the rudeness of his defenders. What gets me is their reactions is what they say they don’t like about Trump. Trump supporters can be just as ferocious. (reveal to me in email?)
That's what I love about Rush! I had forgotten about this until he mentioned it today. Anybody that thinks Romney was a true conservative is living in an alternate universe!
(((Chuckle!)))
I lost all respect for Dana Laesch when she staged a coup on the local radio station to oust Limbaugh. All people had to do was participate in a poll to say who should be on. This was pathetic as those on the left got wind of this and got their way by booting Rush off the airways. Dana is nothing more than entertainment while Rush is a little more substantive. Beck I only listened when he had his shows on Fox that illustrated historical events. Some of what he said in those shows were spot on. However I can’t stand to even listen to him when he isn’t talking history.
Is Meese still alive? While I grew up in the age of Reagan who can forget Meese’s Porn fight.
I watched four of these “consevative” yahoos on Megyn Kelly a couple of nights ago and was absolutely stunned at the vapidness and duplicity of their attacks against Trump. Most repeated the mantra over and over again that conservationism was all about “principles and ideas”, but not a single time did they mention anything about ACTING to do anything with those “principles and ideas”.
Much of what they said was simply false or ridiculous, like one comment about Trump destroying “centuries” of conservative ideas and principles. Multiple times they indicated that Trump was unfit because he hadn’t spent decades “paying his dues” or “honing” his conservatism. They attacked Trump for positions held decades ago and at the same time dismissed that same issue regarding Reagan’s evolution. The most outrageous accusation was that Trump was a “strong man” who wanted “the trains to run one time”, and not-veiled-at-all reference equating Trump to Mussolini.
These people were truly pathetic and their absolute fear, panic, and hatred of Trump could be practically seen oozing out of very pore.
Clearly, these people are frightened that they and their ilk will become completely irrelevant when Trump is elected President. It was clear that they feared and loathed Trump FAR more than Hillary or any other Democrat. It was also clear that they are totally out of touch with the outrage in the GOP electorate as a consequence of the GOP elite winning both Congressional Houses and not doing a damn thing to stop any portion of Obama’s agenda.
This really looked like a last gasp by the old guard to put on a full court attack one last time before Trump actually starts winning primaries.
As far as I’m concerned these people are traitors and liars and don’t give a damn about conservatism or our country. They only care about themselves. Personally, I was completely outraged at how these people pretend like they are the great keepers of THE CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES and pretty much anyone who supports Trump is an uneducated yahoo.
