Cruz seizes on eminent domain as wedge against Trump in New Hampshire
CNN ^ | Fri January 22, 2016 | Theodore Schleifer

...In the eyes of Ted Cruz, here's another "New York value" embodied by Donald Trump: seizing private people's property to build skyscrapers with his name on it.

As the rivalry blooms between the Republican field's top presidential contenders, Cruz and his allies are eyeing a major opportunity in this rural state to cast Trump as an overly zealous land-grabber, profit-driven elitist and big-government liberal, prioritizing commercial interests like his own over conservative values.

"Trump, with his casinos, he can take the land because it's in his best interest," former Sen. Bob Smith, a Cruz co-chairman, said here. "It's a big deal here, but I don't think it's gotten much publicity -- but I think it will."

...

"Donald Trump has said he thinks eminent domain is fantastic, and he supports using government power to seize private people's homes, to give them to giant corporations to say hypothetically build a casino," Cruz said in Wakefield, the first time that Cruz voluntarily brought up Trump's record before an audience.

"Now he's entitled to have that view," Cruz added, "but my view is we have an obligation to protect the rights of Americans, and private property is essential to the rights of Americans."

Trump has been one of eminent domain's strongest supporters, including praising the 2005 Supreme Court Kelo v. New London decision reviled by conservatives for staying that the government's power to repossess property can apply not just for public projects, such as a highway, but for private development as well.

"Eminent domain -- when it comes to jobs, roads, the public good -- I think it's a wonderful thing," Trump said on Fox News in October. "I fully understand the conservative approach, but I don't think it was explained to most conservatives."

A keystone pipeline is different than a parking lot for a casino.

Cruz supports eminent domain for the public good. That does not include parking lots for limousines at casinos.

I’m sure Trump supporters are counting on and hoping that most voters will not know what eminent domain is.

He’s right.

It is unfortunately settled, meaning it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and it really doesn’t matter any longer who is for it or who is against it.

What bugs me is that we are letting these nine lawyer gods have the final say in our society.

They can take up any issue they choose and decide it any way they choose anytime they want, and we have zero recourse.

It is time to Article V that court, because the federal government is not going to reform it.

SCOTUS has entirely too much power.

Trump hasn't been part of the eGOP "scene" in DC and those that have spent their entire lives climbing the social ladder in the eGOP are scared they won't retain their positions if Trump wins. Period. THAT is why they oppose Trump.

"Don't look now, but while our best conservative is running a political campaign, Trump is leading a rebellion. Not as a liberal or a conservative politician, but as a successful red-blooded, can-do American capitalist.", Jim Robinson

I agree.

And I can’t think of anyone better suited to gut it than Cruz -— who, after all, clerked there, worked there, and argued for Texas there.

He knows the ins-and-outs better than anyone.

Wrong.

The people best suited to do it are state congresses.

The federal government is not going to reform itself.

If we don’t reform it, it will never be reformed.

It’s that simple.

1. States do not have “congresses”

2. The only way the state “legislatures” could do anything would be to call a Constitutional convention, which I agree would be a good thing.

Indeed.

That’s the only way.

And eh whatever they have two houses so, forgive my misnaming it please.

Regardless of who we elect to the federal government, that beast is going to continue to consume everything in its path unless we gain control of it through other means.

If it were transporting oil for U.S. consumption, I might agree with you. But it wouldn’t have done that.

Is it because Goldman Sachs benefits from redevelopments?

Yikes.

Free Republic has become unhinged.

Everyone needs to step away from the keyboard and get some fresh air.

It sure seems as if basic logic gets buried when they work so hard to paint Trump as the all powerful evil force.

I spent one day, just one, putting some of my thoughts out there. I give, they are hopeless. Completely attached to this false idea of who is or isn’t pure enough. It’s sad because it will halt any and all momentum necessary to get us off this cliff.

I’m going to go back to sitting back and watching screeching fools scream their heads off with blatant twisted half truths, all in their righteous attempts to get ‘their’ guy in office. Too bad they are so inept at basic math!

Trump believes rich people should be able to seize private land using government power to give to rich guys like him. That's not remotely conservative.

And that's not a remotely fair description.

Don’t give up the fight. I enjoy correcting people. Cruz best serves the Republican cause in the Senate. Let him pass some constitutional saving laws and Trump will sign them. Cruz as president would not have any idea how to get anything done. He has no executive skill sets that I have seen.

I agree with your points. As for shedding light, I have no qualms about doing so either. It just is exhausting when the person is unwilling to hear another point of view, or more importantly, review some concrete evidence.

I’m sure I’ll join in again, as I have already today when I thought I was done! Thanks

I see I shut them up about the keystone pipeline. Did they think that would be govt owned like a highway?

It's a huuugee issue.

Anyone who thinks that's even in the top 20 of issues people are voting on in 2016 are smoking Canadian weed.

The crony capitalism of Obama and Trump IS a core issue.

Trump is the epitome of an insider.

His bribes to politicians are merely the flip side to the anger at corrupt politicians in the Washington machine.

A briber is just as bad as a bribee.

He used his power and money to try to steal a window’s house for his casino parking lot.

That’s about as bad as it gets.

Yes you did :)

And to answer your query, I would say no, I don’t see much evidence of ‘thinking’ from the rapid group spamming this board with hate Trump talking points...
