Conservatives Should Ask, ‘Does Trump Walk with Us?’
National Review ^ | January 21, 2016 | L. Brent Bozell III

Posted on 01/21/2016 9:06:37 PM PST by Isara

Longtime conservative leader Richard Viguerie has a simple test for credentialing a conservative: Does he walk with us?

For the simple reason that he cannot win without conservatives' support, virtually every Republican presenting himself to voters swears so-help-me-God that he is a conservative. Many of these politicians are calculating, cynical charlatans, running as one thing only to govern in a completely different direction. See: McConnell, McCain, Hatch, Boehner, et al. And for decades it's worked. Conservatives look at the alternatives-Reid, Pelosi, Obama, Clinton, et al.-and bite the bullet. We so often "win"-only for nothing to come of it.

The GOP base is clearly disgusted and looking for new leadership. Enter Donald Trump, not just with policy prescriptions that challenge the cynical GOP leadership but with an attitude of disdain for that leadership-precisely in line with the sentiment of the base. Many conservatives are relishing this, but ah, the rub. Trump might be the greatest charlatan of them all.

A real conservative walks with us. Ronald Reagan read National Review and Human Events for intellectual sustenance; spoke annually to the Conservative Political Action Conference, Young Americans for Freedom, and other organizations to rally the troops; supported Barry Goldwater when the GOP mainstream turned its back on him; raised money for countless conservative groups; wrote hundreds of op-eds; and delivered even more speeches, everywhere championing our cause. Until he decided to run for the GOP nomination a few months ago, Trump had done none of these things, perhaps because he was too distracted publicly raising money for liberals such as the Clintons; championing Planned Parenthood, tax increases, and single-payer health coverage; and demonstrating his allegiance to the Democratic party.

We conservatives should support the one candidate who walks with us.

If Cruz wants to beat Trump, he’d best get to doing it. There are no short cuts. He’s got to get fired up.

Come on, NR, don’t you know what happens when you p_e in Trump’s Wheaties? Superman and Chuck Norris know better than to get on his wrong side....so does Rick Perry, Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, Lindsey Graham....

When Trump could stand against the Obama policies destroying our economy and founding principles as Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-a, Lakewood Bakery, and many others did, where was Donald? Where was Donald when a County Clerk from rural Kentucky was sent to jail for obeying the law, where was he?

Oh yea, he was far too busy kissing their backsides to take a stand against them or grow a backbone....

I think he tried....we will see the result, soon, I guess, but the latest CNN poll FWIW doesn’t look good as of now.

Better to attack the messenger than to provide evidence of Trump’s conservative bonafides.

Donald Trump will say anything to anyone for that moment and then change when in front of another crowd. We cannot afford to have the democrats get in power. I figure he will be the one that will be the next president.

I fear though that Trump will feel sorry for them and appoint liberal judges, sign off on liberals bills like Arnold Schwarzenegger did in California when he was governor. Ted Cruz is not well known enough. I would rather have him win (with reservations) but Trump will win big.

He needs to be a conservative and get rid of the disaster of these past years with the do nothing republicans but help the democrats and the obama treachery.

You can't possibly be serious. Brent Bozell and his family have been true conservatives before most conservatives now alive were born.

His father co-wrote a defense of McCarthy at a time when virtually no other conservaties would publicly stand up for him. Bozell III has been exposing the lies of liberal media for over 30 years.

To claim he's "Establishment" is a preposterous lie. Is there no depth to which you Trumpbots will not sink?

Lifelong DEM, socialized medicine fan, and pro-choicer Trump is a con-man's con man.

He is remarkably good at telling us exactly what we want to hear, and we want to hear it so very badly, that some very fine folks among us believe him.

I know better.

He's a fraud (one strongly, strongly suspects) and a darned good one.

I don't believe him.

(I didn't believe Perot either.)
