Donal Trump says he will force Apple to build its "computers and things" in the United States

Trump told the audience at Liberty University that to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States he would make Apple "build their damn computers and things in this country." While this isn't a bad idea, or even the first time it has been suggested, Trump didn't offer any specifics on how he would force Apple to abruptly change its manufacturing.

"Please, we have such amazing people in this country: smart, sharp, energetic, they're amazing," Trump said. 'I was saying make America great again, and I actually think we can say now, and I really believe this, we're gonna get things coming... we're gonna get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries."

There's currently no legal reason as to why Apple would have to bring all of its manufacturing stateside under a Trump presidency, although factors like incentives and tax breaks for the company could be offered. Nevertheless, Trump didn't detail his plans for forcing Apple to manufacture in the United States at all.

Good idea but a poor way of saying it.

I would mandate that goods sold in the USA must comply with American standards. Human rights, safety, environmental, etc. That would bring a ton of manufacturing back here.

No more outsourcing to Chinese slavers who pollute the entire planet!!

We don’t need another 8 years of Obama wannabe dictator ruling by executive order.

The Cruzettes keep saying he is a globalist and now they post a thread about Trump wanting to keep production in the United States. So which is it? Sounds like you guys are trying to have it both ways.

I hate being forced to do anything and who is he to force a business to build here? His attitude is not “I’ll make it so good here the CHINESE will want to make their stuff here” it’s I’ll force them? hmmm.

A few ecomonic zone with low taxes, a threat to force tarriffs for cheap chinese electronics, a break on regulations, Lower mim. wage for start ups. Lots of way to make US factories a good idea.

Or make the business climate so attractive that they would never consider leaving in the first place.

I couldn’t agree w you more. The stream of consciousness gibberish shtick wears really thin...not the sign of a statesman. Narcissistic jerk is right.

Of everything he says, when he says he would make Ford decide not to move to Mexico with just a phone call, that just stops me right there. Of course I want jobs to stay here, but how about stopping the reasons companies want to leave instead of threatening a private company?

His wanting to stop illegal immigration and questionable refugees is within the office he is campaigning for and I’m all for it. But I don’t want a dictatorship.

Then he needs to cut out the populist one liners and just say so.

You are correct. Not only do we have the labor costs, we have the other regulatory costs for pollution, special interests, etc. In college I was taught how wonderful global trade is, but after years in the real world, I figured out it is not flawless.

Your reading comprehension sucks. He said “we’re gonna GET Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries.” not FORCE. Of course the difference between “force” and “get” may be a too nuanced for you.

Part of “making America great again” is reversing the loss of manufacturing jobs in the US.

I get the sentiment.

Optimistically, he could go for some long needed business tax reforms, and perhaps dismantle EPA, DOJ, and a few other worthless alphabet agencies to make manfacturing more realistic here again.

He can’t force them to come back. Pesimmistically he’s advocating fascism. Imagine what his reaction would be if he had a business that Obama demanded and compelled him to bring back here.

Gotta think how it’s going to sound before speakng sometimes - or clarify better while doing so.

Oh, and don’t forget his stupid claim to put 45% import tax on cheap foreign goods. He must have skipped his business classes in international finance to dream that one up. He pulls that crap on China, Russia, Japan, India, etc. and they will show him what happens when they all dump US bonds. Our currency collapses and we are all buying $200.00 loaves of bread.

But that is ok for him to spew BS like that, all his followers believe him.

When it comes to computers and phones what is done in China is just assembling. This is a low skill low value job. According to this list - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_semiconductor_fabrication_plants - there is not a single modern semiconductor fabrication plant in China.
