What to make of Senator Ted Cruz? He is a very, very smart man who apparently believes that the median Republican presidential primary voter is very, very dumb. Thereâs some evidence for that proposition â Donald Trump still leads in the national polls â but Cruzâs strategy rests on the proposition that these voters will enjoy being condescended to. He may very well have chosen the most effective strategy. Senator Cruz is very much hardwired into the current us-and-them mood of the electorate, Right and Left, and though he is a creature of Princeton and Harvard Law whose household long has been sustained by a Goldman Sachs paycheck, Cruz is keenly interested in giving the impression that there exists a vast cultural chasm between himself, the champion of what some populists like to call âthe Real Americaâ â as though Ronald Reagan of Hollywood, J. P. Morgan of Wall Street, and Bill Gates of Harvard werenât real Americans â and the wicked Washington-based elite. Cruz is an outsider to the extent that a member of an Ivy League eating club (have someone explain it to you) who went on to be a member of the nationâs most prestigious lunch club, the Senate, can be an outsider. He is a Texan, albeit a Texan from the anodyne suburbs of Houston, which could be the suburbs of anywhere. He didnât grow up baling hay in Muleshoe.

"And what are Republicans doing? Sneering at âNew York values,â when they should be seeking to satisfy the best of those values, such as the entrepreneurial spirit and the hunger for advancement â which are, after all, the best of American values, too."
America, thank God, does not embrace NY Values.
Got news for you: These are the values that Ted is referring to, spoken by the NY Governor:
'He recently told conservative Republicans â specifically anyone who is pro-traditional marriage, pro-life or pro-guns â they "have no place in the state of New York"."

I’m so glad you let us know this was an anti-Cruz article. I would never have figured it out on my own.
The writer is a moron. And by the way, he says Trump is worse.
So if it is anti-Cruz, it is double-plus anti-Trump.
Anyway, the writer is a moron so anything he says about either candidate is 100% worthless.
“Iâm so glad you let us know this was an anti-Cruz article. I would never have figured it out on my own.”
That was to let the Trumpbots know as they do need to be led, don’t they?
I’m sure I couldn’t say, and you seem to be rather a provocateur, as well as new here. How charming.
How smart is it to go out and piss off the nation’s largest city and hometown of your biggest opponent?
But then, we know Cruz isn’t very experienced.
silly values like running into a crumbling tower 110 stories tall?
blood donations through the roof.
hundreds and hundreds of stories of people helping each other.
Cruz lost my vote. It’s Trump now.
Not new, just in a new form.
On the contrary, Trump won NY's electoral votes two nights ago.
Here’s the thing.......the writer Williamson stepped into his own steaming pile. If memory serves, just a couple weeks ago, he wrote some good scathing pieces making fun of the wimpy college students and their need to not be offended in their “safe spaces.”
Now pansie ass Williamson needs a safe space for the precious bois of NYC I guess.
“How smart is it to go out and piss off the nationâs largest city and hometown of your biggest opponent?”
You must not be from the South.
Southerners know exactly what Ted said and meant, and their strong propensity for Social Conservatism was the target Ted wanted. Those Southerners who were ready to pull the lever for Trump will be thinking about whether he has the true social values they strongly believe in.
And exactly how many votes was he going to get from the bastion of liberalism NY anyway?
Cruz is very, very smart on this.
“On the contrary, Trump won NY’s electoral votes two nights ago”
I did not realize NY already voted. Can you direct me to the link of the voting results?
“How smart is it to go out and piss off the nationâs largest city and hometown of your biggest opponent?
But then, we know Cruz isnât very experienced.”
I wonder if Cruz supporters still think this was a “brilliant” trap Cruz set for Trump?
If anything it should put to bed this myth that Cruz is the greatest debater in history and that that alone would win the election.
Would you care to make a wager on that? I would bet a $50 donation to FR contra the prediction that Republican nominee Trump wins New York in the general election.
Good for you. Cruz is a smarmy candidate and he made a mistake attacking the largest city in the USA. And his followers are a whole lot worse.
Occurs to me that Cruz used a trump tactic. Did he get attention? Lolol. Did everyone know what he meant? Of course. Loved his apology. Perfect.
Taping Cris Wallace show - first time since Rush was on. Probably last.
How many laughed when DT said he was probably responsible for hostage release? HAHAHAHAH
Exactly.
For all this talk about how Cruz is “the smartest guy in the room,” he sure does make some stupid mistakes at times. Even if by “New York values” he is talking about NE liberalism, he ought to be canny enough to anticipate how the optics will be turned on it.
So are you saying Cruz or Clinton is going to win NY in Nov?
I don’t have to predict an alternative outcome in order to stake a negative on “Trump wins NY.” (The bet is open to you, too.)
However, I think the more likely outcome is that the Democrat nominee will win NY, even if it’s Bill the Cat.
