The 1 quote Ted Cruz thinks could cost Donald Trump Iowa
The Washington Post ^ | 1/16/16 | Aaron Blake

In case you thought Ted Cruz's "New York values" line on Donald Trump was just a one-off attack, witness this new video from the Cruz campaign.

The video from a 1999 Donald Trump appearance on "Meet the Press" is not a TV ad, but it has all the makings of one. And it erases any doubt about whether "New York values" was intended to be something Cruz would continue to hammer home as voters prepare to cast ballots.

In the video, Trump very much cops to his New York values, citing where he comes from for his positions on no fewer than three issues: gay marriage, support for gays in the military, and so-called "partial-birth" abortion. (He supported the latter two and was undecided on the first.) Each time one of the issues is brought up, Trump volunteers his home town as part of his political identity.

And indeed, there's one money quote from Trump that seems tailor-made for an attack ad in the state that just happens to vote first.

"I've lived in New York City and Manhattan all my life," Trump said. "So, you know, my views are a little different than if I lived in Iowa -- perhaps."

Have you read that even Huchabee says 15 years is a long time and much different than a 15 minute change of opinion as some have done...TPA...

Ted Zeppelin’s video was the main weapon in his arsenal?

Well I really doubt it will be effective. That’s is not for him but watch for Ted’s numbers to drop and give TRUMP a boost in the polls!

The New York values phrase resonates in the heartland.

It’s a political campaign. Iowans are not newcomers to campaign fighting. Cruz and Trump both want to win but they both want their opponents to come into their camp if their opponent falters. They must attack to win. That’s the way this is played. So they go after weaknesses. Cruz attacks Trump’s recent conversion to conservatism in 2011. Trump attacks Cruz’s going to rich cronies for money and his birth in Canada. They both pray they don’t cross the line that sends those voters to some establishment candidate. We’ll have 2 weeks of this and then on to New Hampshire. .

16 years ago, and he has reversed himself.

Oh really? Any action to back up the words?

Anyone who hasn't evolved in some way in 16 years needs to be checked for a pulse.

Well that's funny. My principles have not changed a bit, my whole life long. That's the nice thing about principles... A concrete sense of what's right and what's wrong.

It’s a problem because social conservatives sit out elections when peeved and cost otherwise winnable elections. Cf. Romney and McCain in comparison to Bush43. Rats are normally peeved so still vote when peeved. You may not have to give them a lot to get them to vote, but you can’t slap them in the face. They’ve been getting that a lot from Obama and GOPe and are as mad as hell about it as are folks abused in other ways by the same. You’ll get more votes by uniting all the anti-lib forces, than by making picked subsets hyperactive. Unlike Rats, hyperactive GOP and independents are still only worth one vote each.

So, you admit that the Trump campaign wants to marginalize social conservatives. Trump is morphing into the Giuliani campaign 2.0 right before our eyes.

So you admit that social conservatives are all or nothing. Meet them all the way or they feel they have been dissed. Seems to me that getting DC under control, getting the budget under control, getting immigration under control is more than meeting conservatives half way.

You can’t expect us to want to climb onboard with those who wish to marginalize and demean us.

Teddy Calgary was for a 500% increase in H1-B visas and an increase in the already insane rate 1 million/year in legal immigration....16 MONTHS ago.

I was doing my once-in-awhile-joke. :)

Nonetheless, your scenario is just fine for me. Assuming the USA can last that long after Barry’s damage. I’m not optimistic, I’m sorry to say.
