After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them, Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday with a stream of pointed criticism directed at the GOP front-runner.
At events in New Hampshire and in radio interviews, Cruz took direct aim at Trump on several fronts: tying the billionaire to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, questioning his ability to win a general election, casting doubt on his ability to serve as commander in chief and disputing his "New York values."
The swiftness and ferocity of the attacks is striking for Cruz, who said as recently as Monday that he didn't want to go to war with Trump. The two men are battling for the top spot in polls in Iowa, which host the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 1. Cruz said Tuesday that Trump was clearly feeling the pressure.
Cruz took direct aim at Trump's competence. "Does a potential commander in chief know what the nuclear triad is, much less is he or she prepared and able to strengthen it and keep this country safe?" Cruz asked on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." In a Republican debate last month, Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation.
And he jabbed Trump on the billionaire's cosmopolitan lifestyle. âI think he may shift in his new rallies to playing New York, New York, because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,â Cruz told Carr.

And then they’ll take Cruz out. They don’t want the one that called McConnell a liar as their leader.
Since it’s been pretty well establish that Trump is winning some black voters and Reagan Democrats that have voted Dim for years, I wonder if any of the polls are measuring that effect of Trump winning votes that have normally gone to the Dim candidate?
Donald Trump doesn’t present himself as the as Saint, unlike Cruz.

For the record, Iâm a Trump guy, but I can totally vote from Cruz as necessary.
Since I like ‘em both, I don’t usually get involved in these stupid dog fights on FR. We don’t represent the real world anyway, and I’m more interested in how the candidates’ various tactics play in Peoria than in the FR microcosm.
At every Cruz event, he should have special close parking for everyone coming in a Chevy Cruze.
You just know how the thread is going to turn out. 867 posts and the fire will still be raging!
Trump This!
Cruz That!
Pass the popcorn!
We are going to get MARCO.
You would be too if you were in the construction business in New York.
Trump supported killing Gods unborn children. He may well appoint his sister to the Supreme Court.
“Ted Cruz blasts New York Values while taking money from Gay New Yorkers:”
Cruz is against gay marriage, not for discriminating against or shunning gays. Meanwhile Trump attended a gay wedding.
Oh, I get it now. Anyone who tries to stop Trump is working for the GOPe. Thanks for clearing that up.
Do not speak ill of those trying to make America great again.
Bottom line RCP average:
Cruz is winning against Hilary.
Trump is losing against Hilary.
LOL!
Replace the word “style” with “class” and you’ll get the thought.
And you know that her opponents at HP have now said she was doing the right thing.
I’m a Cruz supporter, but I like her as a person,, and after the Obamas, (both) we need a little class in DC.
So did Reagan. Until he changed his mind.
Yep, these Cruz supporters conveniently overlook his strong ties to the old GOPe, Washington Cartel that go back years. Cruz might be conservative on some social issues, but he's right there with the GOPe on immigration and trade issues, no matter how he's tried to spin it since Trump entered the race and made those issues so prominent.
It started with Ted’s Pacs push polling Trump in Iowa to see what line of attack would work and Cruz incorporating the information in his campaign.
Nothing new here. Ted’s Pacs doing his dirty work while, self-funding, Trump has to do his own.
I’m sure Ted learned a few tricks in the 2014 election, of which he was the co-chair, of the NRSC which he also donated $250,000 to.
Cruz is a hypocrite. Attacks New York, and takes money from New York gays. That’s the bottom line.
