Workers at a New Jersey restaurant jumped for joy when they thought theyâd hit the Powerball jackpot, scoring Saturday's $949 million prize.
But the celebration at Grissini's Restaurant in Englewood Cliffs came to an abrupt end when employees realized they'd mistakenly compared Wednesday's winning numbers to their Saturday ticket.
"It was like getting punched in the stomach," said Charles Poveromo, 55, who's worked as a bartender at the restaurant for 13 years.
Poveromo said 42 employees pooled their money together and bought $210 worth of tickets.

There is no statistical difference between buying one ticket or a thousand.
Actually I have nearly just as good of chance of winning without even buying a ticket :-)
If I win I am going to track down that Buddhist Monk who got robbed while buying lottery tickets. Anybody who would chase after a huge black dude while wearing orange robes and have a fight with him has got some courage! The guy could have had a gun. At one point, he goes back after him pounding on the car. I think it was after he got shoved down on the pavement but I can’t remember.
If I win I will gladly give him some money.
But considering how often (if ever), the same set of numbers has come up two draws in a row, for all intents and purposes, this set of numbers is dead.
Very nearly. I went all in and didn't buy 1,000 tickets.
Nope, the difference then would be between something and nothing, which is an infinite difference. So zero to one is infinity, whereas one to a thousand, or even a million tickets, is so negligible your odds don't really change at all.
Therefore, to play the lottery intelligently, buy one, and only one, ticket.
Sad story...
Then they realized that it was Steve Harvey that said they had won.
How much do these tickets cost? $5? $10? I see machines at the supermarket but they seem to sell a range of tickets, and I haven’t seen any under $5. So you’re $5,000 ahead of the game!
Are the workers Brazilian?
$2 each for a basic set of numbers valid for one drawing.
The story I want to hear the ending to is the winning Mega Millions ticket sold this past weekend in Staten Island, NY. If the ticket holder thought he had bought a Powerball ticket, he might not know he won 150 million dollars.
Good entertainment value. A whole day left to enjoy fabuous fantasies. Better value than most movie tickets, IMHO.
Thanks. So luvbach only saved $2k by not buying the 1000 tix.
I may buy one (ONE!) as a birthday gift for the spouse tmo. Or, maybe not.
Well, if they already have Wednesday's winning number, they just need to buy one more ticket.
Around here, the vending machines are just scratchoffs.
All you need to obtain every number combination is $600 million. Fingers crossed that you don't have to split the winnings.
Someone once said that the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.
