NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. presidential candidates are spending long days on the campaign trail and their nights in a succession of budget hotels, often in small towns. Not Donald Trump.
After nearly every rally, the billionaire real estate developer hops into one of his planes or helicopters and returns to New York so that he can sleep in his own bed in his marble-and-gold-furnished Trump Tower apartment in Manhattan.
In November and December, Trump held six rallies in Iowa, visited a local production plant and held one town hall, flying home each night. His nearest rival for the Republican nomination, Ted Cruz, has zigzagged around the state, holding around a dozen town halls and twice as many "meet-and-greet" sessions, and bedding down between stops in hotels.
Trump's determination to sleep at home every night raises eyebrows among election campaign veterans, who say it could cost him. Voters in Iowa and New Hampshire often want more personal attention; they feel they play a special role in choosing presidential nominees because their contests are held first.
Trump leads in polls in New Hampshire but he has slipped behind Cruz in Iowa. Cruz has done what U.S. presidential candidates typically do: He has made the state a virtual second home in the run-up to Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucus.
This week Cruz is crisscrossing the state in a bus, cruising through small hamlets with stops at a pizza place, coffee house and even a water park.

Yup. . .has one comment on Yelp — did you post that?

Looked at it via street view and I must say, you are a braver man than me for staying there. . .
We agree on this - ‘the law’ is the rock-bottom minimum standard for human behavior.
Silly article.
Trump’s poll numbers indicate he is making smart moves. His money, his business.
Also disagree with author’s contention re budget hotels... Courtyard Marriott is positioned as a medium priced business hotel—not budget.
It's certainly a different way of campaigning. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
Yeah.
He brings his bedroom and staff with him, in the Trump jet. And instead of addressing 100 here, 100 there in small towns, he rents YUGE halls and they come to him. He’s efficient. He’s a builder. He builds it and they come!
.
So then the question is do we want a rock bottom man in the Offal orifice?
I realize that we have had four sub-bottom men there in the last 50 years, but we need to greatly tighten the standards.
.
>> “Heâs a builder.” <<
Side job! - Reality is that he is a grafter, and swindler.
How about some specifics?
Speaking of grafting and swindling. Here in Washington State's 4th District we had a representative for 20 years. Retired last year. Really did nothing in Congress except get enough seniority to get of the taxpayers money to keep funding Hanford. Since he was in a safe district his campaigns cost next to nothing. I would surmise that when he retired he walked away with a lot of unspent campaign money.
There are 535 of them in Congress right now, with very few exceptions.
Does that qualify as graft and swindling?
.
To the extent that your assumption is accurate, it does.
Not a problem. Air Force One is plenty big enough so he can bring his own bed with him anywhere he may need to go.
I've seen much, much larger rallies for Sen. Cruz.Post one.
I believe Trump is somewhat of a germaphobe,. Doesn’t like to shake hands.
Can’t say I blame him.
No, not me.
And I’ve gotta tell you, it looks like a castle compared to when we stayed there.
Long story, but we didn’t have much of a choice. Arrived 1AM, left 6AM.
Good one!!!
My son was so anti-Trump in the beginning. He liked Carson, CRuz, Fiorina, etc. Now he’s all in for Trump and its because of these constant desperate lame attacks. Surely this is having the same affect on others.
Taking a shower on a plane...I can imagine some pretty bad scenarios if the plane hits a little turbulence.
That was once.
Any indication he is straying this time?
Maybe that one series of indiscretions taught him better.
Hell Trump could just park his plane in Iowa and sleep on his plane which is like a luxury suite at the Hilton.
...I can imagine some pretty bad scenarios if the plane hits a little turbulence.

If you assume showering during flight. However suppose it’s done
sitting on the parking apron at the airport.
