Donald Trump Keeps Pushing Ted Cruz Citizenship Issue
The New York Times ^ | January 6, 2016 | Alan Rappeport

Donald J. Trump continued to fan the flames of doubt over Senator Ted Cruz's citizenship on Wednesday, suggesting that his Canadian roots might be a problem if he won the Republican presidential nomination.

The decision to confront Mr. Cruz more directly comes as Mr. Trump, who has dominated most national and state polls for months, faces the prospect of losing to the Texas senator in next month's Iowa caucuses. Popular among evangelical Christians and conservatives, Mr. Cruz has become a favorite to win the first contest of the nominating process.

Trump lies and says Cruz heard he has a Canadian passport. Trump’s a conman & clinton donor.

I have been reading a lot of info such as this, and I am not sure why it is so difficult for so many to understand.

Really? If it is so easy to understand why are you having such difficulty?

You don't seem to grasp that congress only has the power of naturalization. They can't create a natural born Citizen with the pen. That's why it's called a Naturalization Act. It can only describe by law who is to be a naturalized Citizen.

Regardless, the Naturalization Act of 1790 was repealed by the Naturalization Act of 1795 with the lead of then rep. James Madison and the approval of George Washington and specifically changed "shall be considered as natural born citizens" to "shall be considered as citizens of the United States."

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 provides that a Citizen of the United States was eligible to be President only if born before the adoption of the Constitution and that thereafter only a natural born Citizen was so eligible. Hence, Congress referring to one as a citizen rather than a natural born citizen, given the presidential eligibility requirements of Article II, was a serious thing.

I think Trump thinks that if he wins Iowa, it’s over. He wants to take Cruz down just a notch to ensure this, without seriously injuring politically an important future ally and possible running mate.

“I really like Cruz and believe he is a patriot, but he is ineligible,” says legal activist Larry Klayman, who in 2014 asked the Department of Homeland Security to begin deportation proceedings against Obama.

Well, I don't know why one who is so far ahead in the polls would find the need to start getting UGLY to a fine man as Cruz.

This is not the first thing, the other was the STUPID remark about evangelicals coming out of Cuba. Cruz did not come out of Cuba. What the Heck kind of statement is that? But I let it slide........

I must agree. That is a MUCH better scenario.

it will hurt Cruz, at least short term, maybe. He is a brilliant man and i’m sure a LARGE percentage of his followers see right through this nonsense.

the media’s tactic isn’t to help trump in the long run. I think they think he is the more likely to implode (though it hasn’t happened yet) and view Cruz as a legitimate threat.

I agree. I think Ted is a fine man.

Would be the most brilliant president we’ve had since I’ve been alive. born in ‘68.

I know Nixon was smart but not at this level, don’t think.

Don’t know about Dwight as he was before me.

I know some of the earliest guys were obviously brilliant with great foresight.

Many minds will agree with Klayman, but

Ted Cruz is a BRILLIANT ATTORNEY with many Supreme Court WINS notched on his belt. There is no way this man is stupid enough to launch a campaign knowing he was ineligible. NO WAY....

Ted Cruz being the patriot and you agree he is, this man is not STUPID. He knows the constitution inside and out.

“The Act also establishes the United States citizenship of certain children of citizens, born abroad, without the need for naturalization:”

Citizenship is not the question. The issue is meeting the requirements of “Natural Born Citizenship.” The USSC clearly answered this issue (of what a Natural Born Citizen was) in Minor v Happersatt.)

Obama, with his foreign citizen father, clearly did not meet the Article II standard. He, they used “Jus Solis” as a “work around.” The damage Obama has done (and is doing) to the US, illustrates the Wisdom of the Founders when they wrote Article II limiting the Presidency to those born and raised as Americans exclusively.

For the Democrats redefining NBC to merely “Jus Solis” helped them get Obama past Article II. Foolishly the RNC let them get away with it. As a side benefit for the Democrats it has help them establishes the children of illegal aliens, “anchor babies” as citizens.

Try telling the American Kennel Club that your mongrel, who was born in a French Poodle kennel, is therefore a “Poodle.
Won’t Fly will it? Neither should have Obama, a born mutt!

Poodles born to Poodle parents are Poodles. Period.

As for Cruz, if both his parents were American Citizens he is for all intents and purposes, not only a citizen, but also a NBC. While born just across the border in Alberta, Canada, Cruz was raised in American, to American culture, values, and mores. Nothing “foreign” about him.

Obama, born of an American mother was never raised an American (or for that matter in America).

Cruz, born of an American mother and father, was raised not only as an American, but as a highly Patriotic American, meeting the Founders intent as expressed in Article II.

Well, born 39 here and I have seen a few. Each of those you mentioned were for their own time. Personally I never liked Nixon, still don't.

But none of them or anyone today can hold a candle to the brilliance of TED CRUZ. Even his enemies will have to acknowledge that FACT.

Bottom line: I want to win......

its funny. I’m a Cruz guy who would vote for trump in the generals and this doesn’t bother me. as a matter of fact, if this is as dirty as he gets on Cruz i’ll be thrilled. didn’t say anything about appearance or family or personal traits, trying to use some unfounded doubt to his advantage. it is politics.

A refreshing reasoned take. The childlike potshots that go back and forth here between supporters don't serve anyone or anything. They don't change anyone's mind they just muck up the waters. Both candidates are going to point out things. on each other that can be questioned, like you say it's politics and they are opposing each other for President that is a lot at stake. In fact, it would be hypocritical for anyone who publicly questioned Obama's citizenship to not at least ask about Cruz's.

That’s crap. You just found out that Cruz was born in Canada to a mother that was a US citizen? This has been well known by everyone, including Trump. What a freaking blowhard...

Hussein was born to a Kenyan national father and an under aged American mother. Bid difference.

Obama was born in Hawaii to Stanley Ann Dunham and Frank Marshall Davis. The real birth certificate probably showed this and conflicted with documents he completed to obtain financial aid in college. His true father’s identity would have caused him legal problems. The Nigerian was used as cover.

I’ve read the Acts and the Articles you referenced many times the past few years.

I have no difficulty with it at all and it seems I’m in with good company. We shall see soon enough.

Yes, I do like Cruz. Maybe Trump, in addition to temporarily dislodging a few caucus goers in Iowa, sincerely wants to inoculate him on this issue for the longer run. As many people have noted, they are natural allies.

I didn’t hear that one about the Evangelicals coming out of Cuba. What is the point of saying things like that? He needs to be careful. Save the nastiness for Hillary and BO.
