Ted Cruz said during an appearance in Iowa on Monday that thereâs a difference between him and Donald Trump on immigration.
The Texas senator, who is leading the field of Republican presidential candidates in Iowa according to the latest polls, was asked by a man in the state if, like Trump, he believed that all undocumented immigrants should be deported.
Cruz replied, âAbsolutely yes.â
âAnd in fact, look, thereâs a difference,â said Cruz. âHeâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.â
Cruz is on a six-day trip around the state to shore up support for his candidacy. He made the remarks during an appearance in Boone. The video of the exchange was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday. Hereâs a transript of the exchange:
QUESTIONER: Both you and Donald Trump are really strong on immigration, but he supports deporting all the illegal immigrants. Are you willing to say the same?
TED CRUZ: Absolutely, yes. We should enforce the law.
Q: All?
T.C.: We should enforce the law.
Q: Ok.
T.C.: And in fact, look, thereâs a difference. Heâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.
Q: So no citizens and all of them?
T.C.: So, if you read I have a very detailed 11-page immigration proposal thatâs on my website itâs TedCruz.org. It was designed with Steve King and Jeff Sessions were the two who sat down with me to prepare it and it is enforce the law across the board.
This move is so typical Cruz. Understated, subtle, perfectly timed-— but lethal.
Tactically, Cruz is head and shoulders, above anyone in the field.

That is not the part that bothers me. It is the word he uses for the legal return - expedite - that bothers me.
He doesnt ‘have’ you. Trump has you. Be honest about it.
BS, you mean to tell me $23-$26 an hour job with benefits and overtime isn’t a good wage? If Americans can’t work for that then they don’t want to work.
Donald Trump says if heâs elected president, heâd let undocumented workers who are productive stay in the United States, but if they just sponge off the system and donât contribute ⦠heâd have them deported.
Trump tells TMZ, heâd create a âsystem of merit,â saying people here illegally should have âa road to legal statusâ if they work hard and contribute to the country.
Trump also says no one really knows how many people are in the U.S. illegally â he cites different stats that show the figure is somewhere between 11 and 30 million. Trump says itâs unrealistic and inhumane to attempt to deport all of them. Thus, the merit system. He says many undocumented workers are âhardworking peopleâ who deserve a chance to live the American dream.

I GUARANTEE very few of the Trump supporters know this is/was(?) his position.
What nonsense.
Facts please?
Let me guess, H1b... He can refute and refute and refute until he is blue in the face yet you folks still bring it up.
How about someone really running from their record... Mr. Trump was a card carrying RAT until 7 years ago...
Put his money where his mouth was by giving money to Clinton herself!
His book written in 2000 advocates many socialist and big government ideals, contrary to every conservative position out there...
Try expediting anything in legal immigration. Try legal immigration with a criminal record. Try legal immigration with no visible means of support. Can’t happen.
I took a moment to think about this... And actually this looks bad for Cruz.
This is the second time he’s attacked Trump captured in a ‘secret’ recording. Now I’m not sure if Cruz is releasing these recordings, or people are working against him... But it seems Cruz has no problem saying one thing in private, and another thing in public.
As far as Trump and immigration... Come on! We all know Trump is for deportation of illegals and if they want back in they have to get in the back of the line. If Cruz wants to attack Trump on immigrations he’s going to get smacked down.
Perhaps the conversation was about why he didn’t support it. Reference if you will that he’s been defending the rule of law for years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0h3Mu8BbjM
“T.C.: We should enforce the law.”
The Republican Party (GOPe / RINOs) have become a party that IS NOT WILLING TO ENFORCE THE LAW.
That is anathema to actual Conservatism. William F. Buckley would cream those S.O.B.s. If you don’t have law, you have some sort of totalitarianism.
WE SHOULD ENFORCE THE LAW! GO TED!
You explain to me why we have a nation filled with unemployed tradesman and college grads with legit degrees in legit fields if we have no skilled labor.
The only BS is yours.
I was always of the understanding once you were deported, you could not longer enter the U.S. So I think legally if you are deported, you are supposed to be out for good, and if that is the law, that is the way it should be. However, altho’ I adore Ted Cruz, and his “rule of law”, he needs to get a ruling on his citizenship issues before he takes us all down the yellow brick road.
Expedite was Trump’s word, not mine.
If, as you say, it cannot be done, why would he tell us that his plan is to expedite their legal return back into the USA?
If we do not expedite those that are coming in legally, why should we expedite those who came here illegally?
I do not think it is fair or wise to give them any status similar to those who did not break the law first, by coming in illegally. You will just ask for more of the same behavior.
Anyone remember this? Ted and Glenn at the border before Trump became the front runner (yes, because of the Trump stance on illegals): http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2014/07/18/mike-lee-sends-regrets-ted-cruz-signs-up-for-glenn-beck-soccer-balls-teddy-bears/
You explain to me why a company can put ads in the paper and the internet and they can’t get enough applicants to fill the ranks. Many can’t pass a drug test, many can’t past the skill test and many others won’t produce after they are hired or won’t come to work or don’t want to start out on second shift. I know this first hand, this is not something someone has told me or hearsay. If you have ever worked in a fab shop or industrial construction you can see this first hand. No one want’s to work as an apprentice to learn a trade either, they think they should start out as top pay as a craftsman.
Cruz, at the proper time, has put Trump in check on this issue. It wasn’t in SECRET, it was at a filmed, public campaign rally in Iowa. Here’s how Cruz always intended to go after Trump— respectfully, demonstrating the inconsistencies in Trump’s positions.;
“Look, there’s a difference,” he told a questioner in Boone, Iowa, in footage first reported on by BuzzFeed. “He’s advocated allowing folks to come back and become citizens. I oppose that.”
Cruz admitted that he and Trump align on deporting all of the nation’s illegal immigrant population, however.
“Absolutely, yes,” the GOP presidential candidate said when asked if he supports deporting every illegal immigrant in America. “We should enforce the law.”
****************
Donald now will have to reply— “Cruz isn’t going to let deported illegals back into the country, why are you letting illegals back in?”
Wall?? Does that mean deportation? Revocation of welfare? A proper reading of the 14th Amendment? ‘Busting’ sanctuary cities? If caught again?
What’s the approach to stem the tide WHILE this process gets implemented?? Govt can’t track visa overstays, what’s going to change to track the revolving door on the S. border???
By law? EO? Exec Action?
What I don’t expect, nor will accept, from ‘Mr. Constitution’, or anyone in govt, is the continued piece-meal approach that (continually) spits in the eye of the People.
Ok- what’s your point?
