Ted Cruz said during an appearance in Iowa on Monday that thereâs a difference between him and Donald Trump on immigration.
The Texas senator, who is leading the field of Republican presidential candidates in Iowa according to the latest polls, was asked by a man in the state if, like Trump, he believed that all undocumented immigrants should be deported.
Cruz replied, âAbsolutely yes.â
âAnd in fact, look, thereâs a difference,â said Cruz. âHeâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.â
Cruz is on a six-day trip around the state to shore up support for his candidacy. He made the remarks during an appearance in Boone. The video of the exchange was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday. Hereâs a transript of the exchange:
QUESTIONER: Both you and Donald Trump are really strong on immigration, but he supports deporting all the illegal immigrants. Are you willing to say the same?
TED CRUZ: Absolutely, yes. We should enforce the law.
Q: All?
T.C.: We should enforce the law.
Q: Ok.
T.C.: And in fact, look, thereâs a difference. Heâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.
Q: So no citizens and all of them?
T.C.: So, if you read I have a very detailed 11-page immigration proposal thatâs on my website itâs TedCruz.org. It was designed with Steve King and Jeff Sessions were the two who sat down with me to prepare it and it is enforce the law across the board.
To be my next door neighbor? To marry my daughter? No. But to go to Washington and shake up the game a bit? Yes, I think he is.
What happened to “Who cares? He’s going to build a wall and stop this invasion”?
You people crack me up.
Sorry I have read too much twisting of Trump’s words here at FR by some, unless I hear video of Trump actually saying what you claim I don’t believe it. I have followed Trump closely and I only heard Trump use the word expedite in regard to the immigration process which is a mess, not to expedite illegals he would deport, back in legally. He has said and I heard him say they would have to go to the back of the line, that isn’t expediting them back in.
Do they make it for horses? Horse strength might work.
My point is that Trump’s plan is the ONLY ONE THAT MAKES SENSE, given how dependent our economy is now on non-American labor.
I like Cruz, and like him a lot, but his statement tells me that he doesn’t fully understand how dependent we now are on these people...it seems more like he was trying to get to the right of Trump on this...rather than have a well thought out plan.
We’ll see how it goes.
Just busting your chops, due to your tagline, that’s all.
Poking fun.
I guess. Is there a drug to help people go right when they’ve already gone left.
I’m not really good at this link thing, but try this:
LOL. The tag line comes in handy sometimes when people attack Trump. They’ll say something like:
“Trump doesn’t support accelerated depreciation for capital equipment with a projected life span of between 5 and 7 years. Therefore he’s really a liberal.”
My response is 2 words: “Tag line.” Nothing else.
Oh! I forgot. Heidi Cruz and Goldman Sachs!
Cruz and Sessions most recent legislation on the H1-B issue and American Jobs First Act.
you know, what Trump said on this is not ancient history, we all remember what he said—— “they all gotta go, then they can come back if there’s no problems”
Then Cruz is your man, since he was talking about a wall when Trump was hosting a reality show.
The answer from Cruz is 100% correct. If Trump would deport 100% of criminals and then screen them carefully before allowing some in as legal immigrants with the same standing as other potential legal immigrants, I’d be okay with that. I am far less okay with rewarding criminals for their crimes, even to the extent of giving them preference for entering our country.
We could use it. Sad that “conservatives” are in need of that kind of help.
Ted wants to enforce the law, but his history in the Senate indicates that he also wants to change the law with regards to legalization (i.e. support existing law but change existing law.)
Listened to first video, “get bad ones and they are never coming back” ... “get the rest out and have a expedited way to get them back into the country so they can be legal” ... “expedite the system”, and then he later says expedite referring to the Dreamers who are good.
Ok here is what I hear. Trump who has said publicly and forcefully, ‘all illegals have to be deported including anchor babies’ (no other candidate has said either of those things) ... and because we still need some immigrant workers the ones we actually need would have to come in legally under work visas. No citizenship! Just legal status to work. Regarding Dreamers, ‘we must have a system where they are legally in the country’.
Tougher than anyone else running and sounds good to me. All illegals out, including anchor babies, Dreamers. They go in line like everyone else who wants a work visa and we give work visas as we need temporary workers. Do you know of a candidate who is saying we shouldn’t give work visas to workers we need? I don’t. Expediting the broken system that now has what 30 million illegals here? Yep fix it and get Americans back to work!
I am better with it if you are hearing it that way.
I hope you are closer to right than the way it is coming out.
It would be wrong to expedite those sent out illegally in front of those who are waiting their turn legally.
That’s all I ask.
I prefer that anyone here who came in illegally is not allow back, period, but no one thinks we can do that, apparently.
Cruz thought he could play it cute on immigration and never get grilled on it and now he is painted into a corner by Trump. Ted has taken waaay too much cheap labor express money to deport anybody.
Thanks for clearing that up.
