Delivering on its promise to deliver "common sense" gun control, the Obama administration on Monday finalized a rule that enables health care providers to report the names of mentally ill patients to an FBI firearms background check system.
The action was one of a series of steps that President Barack Obama had called for in January 2013 in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings to curb gun violence, but the rule was not published until today.
While the 1993 Brady law prohibits gun ownership by individuals who have been involuntarily committed, found incompetent to stand trial or otherwise deemed by a court to be a danger to themselves or others, federal health care privacy rules prohibited doctors and other providers from sharing information without the consent of their patients.
Under the rule, which takes effect next month, for the first time health providers can disclose the information to the background check system without legal repercussions.

“Hello, FBI? My insane neighbor is bitterly clinging to his guns and religion.”
Now all they have to do is redefine mental illness, and presto....they can control who gets or keeps their guns.
Mental illness will be broadly defined; eg. membership in the NRA, Tea Party, FR, etc.
I saw a shrink when pop died 32 years ago.
I was 15. went about 3 months.

this country is cracking up. 250k fine to call a man a man in NYC. now this.
They, under obamacare, are now open records.
It may be too common, but it is NONSENSE, not sense.
And guess what, your government is paying doctors to adopt in their EHR “Meaningful Use” data collection.
What that means in simple terms is that if your doctor has an EHR application and they gather certain information in a certain format, they get paid nice dollars by Uncle Sam.
That information can then be rolled up and shared across all the agencies.
Did you know that EHR software now classifies tobacco usage as a “disorder”?
Ever have an anti-anxiety medication prescribed?
Live with someone who has?
Yes, all this information will eventually be used against you at the point of the background check.
Get your guns and your ammo while you can.
Never let them take them.
..ntal illness will be broadly defined; eg. membership in the NRA, Tea Party, FR, etc.
Now they can finally officially classify liberalism as a mental illness.
Liberalism is a mental disorder. Proven fact.
Unconstitutional.
That’ll work — to make sure people don’t seek help. Now the question is: is it an unintended or intended consequence?
“Now they can finally officially classify liberalism as a mental illness.”
Works for me!
This is not legal.
Be careful what you tell your doctor. And stay away from psychiatrists. Unfortunate, but now necessary.
Folks who could benefit from some treatment now need to avoid it.
Qualifications for determination? Or strictly subjective, arbitrary and capricious kind of like the no fly list.
how far in the future when we start to get reeducated?
Welcome to Soviet Union, komrad. Mental health prisons for those who are “counter-revolutionary”.
