Putin names US among threats in new Russian security strategy
Reuters ^ | 01/02/2016 | VLADIMIR SOLDATKIN

A new appraisal names the United States as one of the threats to Russia's national security for the first time, a sign of how relations with the west have deteriorated in recent years.

The document, "About the Strategy of National Security of Russian Federation", was signed by President Vladimir Putin on New Year's Eve. It replaces a 2009 version, endorsed by then- President Dmitry Medvedev, the current prime minister, which mentioned neither the United States not NATO.

It says Russia has managed to heighten its role in solving global problems and international conflicts. That heightened role has caused a reaction by the West, it says.

"The strengthening of Russia happens against the background of new threats to the national security, which has complex and interrelated nature," the document says.

Conducting an independent policy, "both international and domestic" has caused "counteraction from the USA and its allies, which are striving to retain their dominance in global affairs."

That in turn is likely to lead to "political, economical, military and informational pressure" on Russia, the document says."

The neoconservatives pulled the US out of the ABM Treaty, which specified that neither the US nor Russia would develop and deploy anti-ballistic missiles.

Yes, we pulled out of the treaty the Russians never honored.

Russia and Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, have been demonized by neoconservatives and their puppets in the US government and media.

Poor Pooty Poot.

The Russian government has learned that Washington does not respect Washington's own laws, much less international law, and that Washington cannot be trusted to keep any agreement.

Not like old trustworthy Russia, invading her neighbors, stealing their territory.

Thanks for the article, Paul is still good for a laugh.

IMO, the US and NATO want to keep themselves strong by weakening other countries and manufacturing excuses to weaken them economically. By saying this, I’m being a realist. This is how Russia looks at their situation and this is a reality that we should understand about our competitors on the world stage. Putin is standing up to us and letting us know that he will protect the interests of Russia on the world stage.

Yes, we pulled out of the treaty the Russians never honored.

Bearing also in mind that we legally pulled out of the treaty the Russians never honored.

But shouldn’t Lithuania have the right to arm itself as it pleases? Lithuania is a free, sovereign state and whether it goes nuclear or not should be determined by Lithuanians.

I agree. Imagine if Lithuania decided to arm itself with U.S. nukes pointed at Moscow. The Russians would have something to complain about, instead of all of their caterwauling about NATO.

Russian foreign affairs has always acted with the result being hurting America’s interests worldwide, and Russian military and intel services have always acted in harming us, undermining us, targeting us and if possible destroying us.

Russian nukes including their sub nukes are in place to utterly destroy us who they consider their enemy.

Actually, the Associated Press had an article a couple of weeks ago that reported that Poland was considering asking for access to nuclear weapons under a NATO program. If you want the link, let me know and I’ll send it to you when I transfer over to my regular computer.

NATO made the agreement. Then they broke it.

Well, duh . . . let me see if I’m following you correctly. Russia reserves the right to threaten its “near abroad” with nuclear weapons, and also reserves the right to prevent them from arming themselves?

Well, in all fairness, and as the Borscht Brigade here never tires of pointing out, the security assurances we gave Ukraine for giving up its nuclear weapons was not a "treaty."

So what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Who signed the agreement? When? Do you have a copy?

No - I was just responding to your request to a pointer that would direct you to “the information that indicates Lithuania wants to target nuclear missiles at Russia.” Not Lithuania, but possibly Poland.

Here is a link: http://www.timesofisrael.com/poland-considers-asking-for-access-to-nato-nuclear-weapons/

As for your subsequent question - “Russia reserves the right to threaten its “near abroad” with nuclear weapons, and also reserves the right to prevent them from arming themselves?” - Yes, Russia does do that. (But consider Aesop’s fable about people in glass houses.)

Ok, so:
1. Lithuania does not want to target nuclear missiles at Russia, and
2. Lithuania has not threatened to use nuclear weapons against Russia.

Moreover, Poland is not on the border with Russia (except for Kaliningrad, which is a Russian nuclear base already). So what about Aesop's fable? Perhaps the Russians should read it.
