Tamir Rice supporters ask LeBron James to boycott games until feds hear case

The fight isn't over for supporters of Tamir Rice, in fact, they're calling on LeBron James for help.

After a grand jury decided Monday not to indict the Cleveland cops who killed Rice, a 12-year-old boy shot dead while playing with a toy gun, Twitter users flooded the basketball champion's timeline with pleas for him to take a stand by sitting on the sidelines.

The hashtag #NoJusticeNoLebron ascended the trending charts - with hopes of using the player's status in the Ohio city to convince the Department of Justice to take on the case.

"Can we collectively flood @KingJames mentions to remind him not to play? #NoJusticeNoLebron," tweeted @TariqToure, an activist and the apparent creator of the hashtag.

Other Twitter users followed suit, some reminding the Cleveland Cavaliers star of his influence.

"@KingJames Twist the system. You have the power to do it. Right now. This second. #TamirRice #NoJusticeNoLebron," tweeted @expandyourfocus.

Some other Twitter users didn't agree with the plan to hold LeBron solely accountable in retrieving justice.

~snip~

James, for his part, has yet to express feelings about the case's end result publicly, though he has thrown support behind other fights for justice including Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin.

I once had the cops called on me when I was out in the desert shooting my bb gun. Someone told the cops I was out there with a rifle pointing it at their home. The cops didn’t rush up on me and start shooting. In fact they waited for me to walk towards them, bb gun in hand, told me why they were there and then listened while I explained I was so far out there was no way a bb could have hit a house. They told me that the homeowners were worried it was a real rifle and in the future to be careful not to point back towards the homes.

Fact is anyone can call the cops and tell them anything. It doesn’t excuse shooting first and asking questions later.

“There’s a guy target shooting near my house” is a totally different call than “There’s a guy with a gun running around the community center.”

Good opportunity for LeBron to denounce these cop haters and the pathetic family that allowed this to happen

You saw the video, but you don’t know what happened.

The cop told him to raise his hands and his response was pull the “toy” out of his waistband? Tamar was playing the role of thug ... Grand jury found no fault of cops and in this case it seems obvious.

Neither statement warrants the police rushing up and shooting a kid before they understand the situation.

I have re-watched the video several times since this thread started and the cop opened fire the instant his door opened. There wasn’t even enough time to issue a command, much less respond to one. If the cop says he issued a clear command before he fired he is lying and sadly that wouldn’t surprise me.

I have no love for the Tamir Rice’s of the world and if he had been shot when pointing that bb gun at someone I would say it was well deserved. However there is no way you are going to convince me that jumping out of a police car and immediately shooting someone who has a gun in his belt is a legitimate action.

Do white people care if LeBron plays or not?

When LeBron is on the team, it brings lots of money into Cleveland, rich white folk. And he does dole out a lot of money, particularly in Akron.

No one has to convince you of anything. The fact a grand jury was convinced is all anyone needs to know.

Case closed.

I remember Columbine, when everyone criticized the cops for delaying action; they thought they were saving lives by shooting an armed threat.

Smug?

As in how smug you’ll feel when Obama’s Just Us thugs rule for the BLM punks? Is that what you want?

I'm betting you have never been involved in a bad situation, one where a two second hesitation will get you killed.

Are you saying you have and that makes you better able to assess the situation? If that is the case was it similar to this and did you shoot anyone?

The way I see it the kid made poor decisions but it only cost him his life because the police also made poor decisions. Do you believe it is reasonable for police to rush up to within 10' of a person they suspect has been behaving threateningly with a gun, jump out of the car and simultaneously shout commands and open fire? I simply don't.

There is plenty of video of the kid walking around with the gun in his hand so I know what that looks like. The gun was not in his hand when the police drove up. I suppose it could have been in his pocket or somewhere else besides his waist band but it was clearly not “pointed” as has been claimed on this thread.

I’m a little fuzzy on the Columbine details but I don’t think I would fault the cops for wanting to know what was happening before rushing into the school. Further I think there are options in between doing nothing and rushing up and opening fire on a person you see with a gun (not even in hand).

Plenty of shootings have been stopped by armed citizens. I would hate to see one of those citizens shot because the cops, responding to a report of a shooting, jump out of their car and immediately open fire on the first person they see with a gun.

Given what we know, I don’t blame the cops in Columbine, but many felt they could have done more if they had entered immediately. We simply can’t have it both ways; if this kid had a real gun and killed people ten seconds after the cops arrived, the victims’ families would be multi-millionaires (and the taxpayers sh!t out of luck).

For those of you here who are stuck in the Way Back Machine, the Golden State Warriors are reigning NBA champs.
