To be clear, Christmas in the United States, despite the name, has very little to do with Jesus Christ and everything to do with consumerism and gift giving.
However, side by side with Easter, itâs also the time when we are most likely to see depictions of Jesus used as tools of white supremacy.
In Atlanta, I see them everywhere I go. Jesus as a blond-haired, blue-eyed baby and his blue-eyed supermodel mother are ubiquitous and done without even a slight hint of humor. It's preposterous. It would truly be no different from depicting Christopher Columbus as a dark-skinned African or Thomas Jefferson as a long-haired Latino. People actually look a certain way.
Jesus was not a European. When mythical baby Jesus and his parents needed to hide, they didn't flee to England, but to Egypt â where scripture suggests they blended in well. HO/REUTERS When mythical baby Jesus and his parents needed to hide, they didn't flee to England, but to Egypt â where scripture suggests they blended in well.
Even if you believe Jesus is a myth and the Bible is a myth, please understand when mythical baby Jesus and his parents needed to hide, they didn't flee to England, but to Egypt â where scripture suggests they blended in well. Two thousand years ago and in virtually every generation since, blending in with the everyday people of Egypt has always meant dark hair and dark features.
Choosing to depict Jesus and his mother in a way other than reality is strange at best and nefarious at worst.
When we lived in California, I cringed when my children saw stringy blond-haired surfers with beards and they would blurt out to us, "Hey, he looks like Jesus!" I would have to stop and correct them and say, "No, he looks how white people want Jesus to look, but Jesus did not look like a California surfer dude."
It's not simply an honest mistake though.
When the man who is deemed the central figure of a religion and indeed the savior of the entire world is consistently portrayed to look like a Scandinavian sailor when he more likely resembled a Syrian refugee, it's being done to advance an Anglo-Saxon, white supremacist agenda.
Let’s burst their bubble.
What a dunce. This guy is supposed to be some kind of leader? Has the intellect of an 8th grader.
So if we depict Jesus as Jerry Seinfeld, Benny Leonard, or Irving Berlin will that be better? No? That’s right Jews are still just too White for the New York Daily News.
I seriously doubt he smarter than a fifth grader, actually I'm sure my grandson who is in second grade is exponentially smarter.
What color is God? Joseph didn’t provide any DNA.
Mythical Little Orphan Annie is now depicted as a black girl, so is mythical Johnny Storm, and mythical Ralph Cramden, and mythical Sgt. Fury.
Focusing on race over reality shows a complete absence of thought and imagination. Jesus is depicted in Europe looking European to make the theological point that Jesus came to save each of us, just as He is often depicted in Ethiopia or China as looking black or Asian.
It's not racism, just an illustration that Jesus came to bring us all closer to God, regardless of the skin color He wore while he walked among us. Mary did not look Swedish, but if art showing her like the girl next door brings people in Stockholm closer to God, then the artistic license is a good thing. Note: Jesus was no more black skinned than He was blonde haired, but that should not matter to people regardless of their skin or hair coloring.
That was one of the most moronic things I’ve ever read starting with the ridiculous premise.
Jesus Christ was a Jew in His human body.
Jeremiah Wright said it was white people what killed black Jesus, the Eye-talian Europeans had him put to death. Mmmmhmmmm. Just like today.
Amos & Andy were more black than Shaun King could ever hope to be. Wonder how he feels about that?
The author needs to lighten up and maybe see a musical to relax. I suggest Hamilton.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus
In Ethiopa, home Christianity since ca. 300 + a bit Jesus is depicted as black. In India where Christianity goes back 200 years more, he is depicted as being dark. It depends on the culture and what it knows of humanity.
i’m pretty sure the Saint Nick wasn’t black, but I didn’t give a @#$ when my black co workers bought their kids black santa cards.
what a @#$@#$.
By the way, dad was from Naples. Better looking than them by a mile but could have passed for Arabic.
Mom was from Sicily, blond and blue, like me. I know some Northern European group invaded there at one time.
So not everyone in one area looks exactly the same.
MOST Sicilians are dark. Most Naples folk are lighter. My parents, just the opposite.
First, Jeffrey Shaun King is an American writer & civil rights activist. He is noted for his use of social media to promote the Black Lives Matter movement. He is ignorant and the article about Jesus is a racist screed. Below is a real description of Jesus:
DESCRIPTION OF JESUS
BY HIS CONTEMPORARY, PUBLIUS LENTULUS,WHO WAS THE PREDECESSOR OF PONTIUS PILATE AS GOVERNOR OF JUDEA
A man of noble stature and of very beautiful countenance, in which such majesty resides that those who look on him are forced to admire him.
His hair is of the color of a fully ripe chestnut(i.e. Red Hair), and from his ear down his shoulders it is of the color of the earth, but shining. It is parted in the middle of his forehead, after the manner of the Nazarenes.
His forehead is smooth and very serene, his face free from wrinkle and spot, and with a slight color.
The nostrils and lips cannot reasonably be found fault with.
The beard is thick, and, like the hair, not very long, and divided in the middle.
There is a look of terror in his grave eyes. The eyes are like the rays of the sun, and it is impossible to look him steadily in the face on account of their brilliancy.
When he reproves, he terrifies; when he admonishes, he weeps. He makes himself loved, and is gravely cheerful. It is said that he was never seen to laugh, but he was seen to weep.
His hands and arms are very beautiful.
In conversation he is charming, but he seldom engages in it; and when he does converse, he is very modest of countenance.
In presence he is the most beautiful man that could be seen or imagined; just like his mother, who is the most beautiful young person that was ever beheld in these parts.
In learning he is an object of wonder to the entire city of Jerusalem. He never studied at all, and yet he knows all sciences.
He wears sandals, and goes bareheaded. Many laugh at seeing him; but in his presence, and when speaking to him, they fear and tremble.
It is said that such a man was never seen or heard in these parts. In truth, as the Hebrews tell me, there never were heard such advices, such sublime doctrine as this Christ teaches; and many of the Jews hold him for divine, and they believe in him, while many others accuse him to me as being contrary to thy majesty.
It is acknowledged that he has never done harm to anyone, but good. All that know him and have had dealings with him, say that they have received from him benefits and health.

The foregoing description is condensed from a letter written by Publius Lentulus, then Governor of Judea, to Tiberius Caesar, Emperor of the Romans.
Not only did Lentulus describe Jesus with Red hair, but a painting done by Hannan just prior to Jesusâ crucifixion, showed Jesus with Red Hair. Known as the Image of Edessa, all future paintings of Jesus were based on that rendition. Hannan was an envoy of King Abgar of Edessa. Coins were minted using that painting as the model. That painting is known as The âMandylion.â
And if you care to believe the readings of Edgar Cayce, he
described Jesus with red hair and piercing blue eyes, steel blue eyes.
So the depictions of Jesus with brown hair are wrong, but he didnât have Black hair. He had Red Hair, and people with Red Hair have white skin, and I donât think we are talking about a dye job 2000 years ago.
I guess that's raciss.
Since Jesus is the son of God, I would expect there to be some family resemblence. For that reason, it is quite understandable for Jesus to have blue eyes and light brown hair.
When mythical baby Jesus and his parents needed to hide, they didn’t flee to England, but to Egypt ââ¬â where scripture suggests they blended in well. This guy shows his ignorance here.
Race is a recent concept.
The Bible doesn’t mention race cause what color one was wasn’t a big deal.
This guy is as race focused as white supremacists.
