In a Tuesday morning interview with radio host Bill Bennett, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)56% defended his omnibus bill's controversial expansion in the H-2B visa program, which would allow foreign workers to fill blue-collar American jobs, by arguing that if the provision were not included, American companies would be forced to shut their doors.
Bennett pressed Ryan on the details of the H-2B visa expansion, slipped 700-pages into Ryan's 2,009-page omnibus spending bill-asking Ryan directly, "Do you believe there are not enough Americans to fill these jobs?"
In response, Ryan described the H-2B visa expansion as "a very small, discrete provision."
Despite the nation's high levels of unemployment and stagnating wages, Ryan continued on to assert, without offering evidence in support of his claim, that corporations are facing a shortage of labor, which rendered the provision necessary. Ryan said:
The reason that this was passed is because there was some seasonal surge jobs that they can't find local workers to fill, like the seafood packaging industry in Chesapeake Bay. You have seafood season, you need people to package those things, to can them. In the North, we have the summer tourism industry. What it is is there's seasonal industries where they can't find local people to do the jobs: kids are already in college or things like that where you have a surge in workers.

Wants to keep his house keeper and lawn ranger with that logic I guess.
For all Freepers who sit out elections because "their" candidate isn't running, consider the wise adage, "The Best Is The Enemy Of The Good."
Have a Blessed Christmas and Keep Fighting the Good Fight in 2016!
Surely they could find a few in the 90+ million who were sidelined from the workforce the last 7 years.
Ryan’s plea rings hollow.
[I worked for a techno/aero company in the early 1980s that played that game. They laid off American workers and replaced them with cheaper foreign workers. It is a scam companies use to reduce payroll but have a technically qualified workforce.]
Of course, I expect even that trouble would disappear if the starting wage was raised by $1 or so per hour. They keep me (for now) because smart@$$ed kids out of college want more and my job isn't something that can be done by a Fluff Studies major.
I have an idea! How about we stop aborting generations of Americans and paying working-age Americans to sit on their asses on welfare!!
Actually he’s right. In my area there is a meat processing plant. They pay good. Most of the workers are from Mexico and the Congo. And they have legal resident visas and have health insurance thru blue cross.
Meanwhile there are also plenty of Americans in this area that are OK to sit around with 5 kids at age 23, on every kind of federal and state program in existence and they don’t want a job because they don’t need one.
Take hope in the coming primary and remember Cantor.
Ryan is following the Chamber of Commence desire for importing more cheap foreign labor. There are still too many Americans who won’t work for the right wages.
He is a liar.
“With our actual unemployment rate at over 10 percent, we have the people but need jobs.”
This tells me that what QUALIFIES for a job is foreign status. If you’re American, you need 3 Master’s degrees and 25 years experience - to earn $9 an hour...
If those freebies weren’t offered those mooches would be working; also, the private sector would take a very active role in the education racket in this country to see that literate workers are formed in schools.
While our lazy welfarian population is used as justification for importing replacement Americans, the fact is that they suppress wages. What happened originally in the tech sector is spreading far & wide now. Many middle-aged and older Americans I dealt with in the financial sector have been replaced by younger Asians; when companies couldn’t send some of their positions to Asia, they simply trafficked Asians here to do the jobs (and “retired” the Americans that had been doing them, regardless of age).
We can’t have it both ways; if we continue destabilizing the job market for American workers, then they will never breed. We are living with the consequences of that decision.
GAH this guy is a motherless tool.
Ryan is a member of the DC Party. (See tagline)
Find. They can either ‘shut down’ or they can ‘pay more for workers’. That’s how capitalism works. Supply and Demand.
I agree. We need to have some type of welfare reform. But the way things stand he’s correct. The solution isn’t to import more but to change the existing programs to make it less appealing to sit on your but and collect a check.
Many companies prefer the indentured servitude arrangements in sponsoring foreigners to dealing with American workers; we are reverting to the days when people were worked six and a half days (with Sunday afternoons off). When cut loose by the companies, they had little left besides the shirts on their backs.
The world’s elites have decided upon a set standatd of living, and late twentieth century Americans were above the mark (and are now being brought down to the level of the average Red Chinese peasant). Drudge had a story about car ownership declining; while many people can point out advantages to leasing, the fact is that it is just another sign of a decreasing standard of living - always in debt, and leaving nothing to heirs. Heirs themselves, like home ownership, are becoming a thing of the past; many Americans today will never have or own a home, car, or children.
The GOPe screws us again.
We can buy one excuse or the other ... but not both.
If it's picking crops maybe 'guest workers' would work - then when the crops are picked they can GO HOME. Not sit here collecting food stamps and benefits on OUR DIME. Taxpayers are tired of that scam.
Yes Paul Ryan, taxpayers are tired of subsidizing farmers with our tax dollars so they can have 'cheap labor' - it's NOT cheap if the rest of us have to support these people for the other 9 months of the year.
Stop it Paul Ryan. Stop seeing the world ONLY through the needs to your donors.
You represent the American People you are NOT there as a goon for Special Interest. Do the damn job... represent us.. the people.
