We want a president we can loathe all of the timeânot support some of the time.
Dear fellow conservatives:
Let us now pledge to elect Hillary Clinton as the 45th president of the United States.
Letâs skip the petty dramas of primaries and caucuses, the debate histrionics, the sour spectacle of the convention in Cleveland. Letâs fast-forward past that sinking October feeling when we belatedly realize weâre going to loseâand lose badly.
Letâs move straight to that first Tuesday in November, when we grimly pull the lever for the candidate who has passed all the Conservative Purity Tests , meaning weâve upheld the honor of our politically hopeless cause. Letâs stop pretending we want to be governed by someone we agree with much of the time, when we can have the easy and total satisfaction of a president we can loathe and revile all the time.
Letâs do this because itâs what we want. Maybe secretly, maybe unconsciously, but desperately. We want fourâand probably eightâmore years of cable-news neuralgia. We want to drive ourselves to work as Mark Levin or Laura Ingraham scratch our ideological itches until they bleed a little. We want the refinerâs fire that is our righteous indignation at a country we claim no longer to recognizeâruled by impostors and overrun by foreigners.
We also want to turn the Republican Party into a gated community. So much nicer that way. If the lesson of Mitt Romneyâs predictable loss in 2012 was that itâs bad politics to tell Americaâs fastest-growing ethnic group that some of their relatives should self-deport, or to castigate 47% of the country as a bunch of moochersâwell, so what? Abraham Lincoln once said âIf you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend.â What. Ever.

This guy is what passes for a Conservative at WSJ?
Sounds good to me....even with your extreme exaggeration.
I hope we get a conservative president and he grants all those rich liberals their wishes about going after those uber wealthy eliteists - their own! They need a good dose of reality.
Sounds like Brett Stephens is quite disappointed that his butt-partner, Yeb!, is no longer in the mix?
They want someone who will make gov "work", ie keep the spigots of cash open full bore.
However, since its part of my cash, I think I'll have a say in it.
And that's what really pisses them off.
Poor pretty boy Brett Stephens... its impolitic to insult the Left and its friends or to be the enemy of political correctness.
Trump has no use for so-called conservative intellectuals. They are more concerned with being nice than with sounding the alarm over the fact the country is in danger!
Screw ‘em.
He’s a liberal, atheist Jew.
Ah, the bitter clingers - clinging to their Karl Marx, their atheistic ideology and their “gun free zone” signs. Who would have thought?
I’d rather swallow razor blades.
Let’s declare right now what Bret Stephens is, a loser surrender monkey GOPee mouth piece.
Trump has a multi-decade record of extremely fair treatment of women, latinos, jewish people and all others. These attacks on him are so weak. He did none of these things. He did call out the pourous border and that gangs, criminals and terrorists and pouring in to take advantage. He did say we can’t import people by the thousands from the middle east without having a functioning immigration system. Decades of history tells us jackholes like this guy from the WSJ are simply losers who like losing with people like Romney, Jeb and McCain.
Why is Stephens worried?
Every one knows Jeb was going to be the Designated Loser to Hillary.
The GOP establishment wants Hillary to become President.
Its more concerned with savaging Trump than with attacking Hillary.
Washington’s Uniparty has its priorities and it ain’t us.
Just another “we need to chose an ‘electable’ candidate” screed.
Dear Bret “the ass clown” Stephens
You never been on our side so just switch parties now. Then you can wallow in your ignorant self righteous PC dogmas untroubled by any such “minor” concerns as principal, consequence or truth.
Forgot this part that the left especially hates:
He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
They won’t be kissing Karl Marx’s butt so much on that Day that they cannot avoid.
His writing style is like that of a “Valley Girl.” The WSJ certainly isn’t what it used to be.
This guy is right on. Lets all hold our noses and vote for a Republican that only fights for his corporate donors. We need another President that talks conservative but surrenders as soon as the fight begins. It has worked well the past seven years since we gave them the HOR. Remember, elections have consequences, but only if you don’t vote rino.
