DES MOINES, Iowa â A fairly well-known anti-gun sheriff seems to have shot himself in the hand on Wednesday night while cleaning his firearm.
Des Moines County Sheriff Mike Johnstone negligently discharged a round into his left hand, and was subsequently transported to the hospitals emergency room. His injury has been described by medical personnel as non-life threatening, but a hand surgeon was called in to assist.
According to the Iowa Firearms Coalition, Johnstone has advocated for more and more gun-free zones. But perhaps Johnstone is most well-known for his statement from 5 years ago.
When Iowaâs concealed carry law went from âmay issueâ to âshall issue,â Johnstone campaigned diligently against the change. He predicted âWild West shootouts,â and called it âA RECIPE FOR DISASTER.â
Well, here we are five years later, and Johnstoneâs âWild West shootoutsâ never happened. However, there may be some truth to the lawmanâs statement. If all gun owners were irresponsible enough to negligently shoot themselves, it might have been âA RECIPE FOR DISASTER.â Fortunately, that doesnât happen because most gun owners are trained and responsible.
Iâd like to recommend the sheriff take one of those gun safety classes that Iowa concealed carriers have to take. He might learn something. In the meantime, Iâm leaving a few pointers below for the Sheriff to read during his recovery.
RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET
I guess we can see why he’s anti-gun.
Guns are dangerous!
How do you clean a weapon with a round in the chamber?
Spitballing here....but I BET it was a Glock and I bet his left hand was over the muzzle as he was trying to pull down the slide lock. Those little buggers don’t have much profile..... Dumbass still probably had a round in the chamber....
That's why he thought he'd dry fire it... to check? Only it weren't dry.
If he had two rounds he would have shot himself twice.
By being a weak closed minded fool of an idiot.
A person whose path in life went into a swamp.
How can you wipe a gun with a round in the chamber? With a cloth?
My bet is he was playing with the weapon and after shooting himself resorted to the old “I was cleaning it” excuse.
It’s not the gun, it’s the bullet!
Nope, the gun were wet. And so were his fruit of the looms after the gun went off.

Another proof of the fact that some voters are just plain stupid.
This must be Monday, December 21st, "The Jokes Write Themselves" day.
Yes, just seeing that as well. So his one or two supporters now have to find a new candidate to support. No one else affected, slow news day so this made the headlines and he gets one last 15-seconds of attention.
I always interpret this to mean he was screwing around, accidentally pulled the trigger while drawing it out of the holster, etc.
The act of ‘cleaning’ usually starts with disassembly (after clearing it of course). So unless all these guys are ‘cleaning’ the outside of the gun, its just a term that means “I screwed up but don’t want to admit it”.
Another possibility is he dropped the magazine and left a round in the chamber. I was in the military, and I can attest that some people, whose experience with pistols is limited to the qualifying range where you fire until the slide locks back, do not fully comprehend the concept of a round in the chamber.
A heart of stone it would take...not to laugh.
:-)
Another way to put this... turns out only police are dangerous.
Step one, remove the round from the chamber.
Most people remove the entire cartridge in a single step.
Some choose to first remove the bullet, then the casing in two steps.
He's a trained professional.
If someone with his training and experience can do this, imagine the normal, untrained, hoi polloi.
