During a weekend campaign stop in south Alabama, Republican senator and presidential hopeful Ted Cruz said he had "three words" for people questioning whether the southern border can be secured: "Secretary Jeff Sessions."
"We are going to deport criminal illegal aliens, we are going to pass Kate's Law [mandatory minimum sentences for illegal immigrants who are deported but later return to the U.S.], we are going to end welfare benefits for those here illegally," Cruz told a raucous crowd of over 1,300 Alabamians. "For anyone who wonders, 'Can we really secure the border?' I've got three words for you: Secretary Jeff Sessions! You want to talk about a homeland security secretary who would go down and build the wall himself!"
Cruz is in the middle of a campaign swing through several southern states, seeking to lock up conservatives support in the southeast where many voters will head to the polls for the so called SEC Primary on March 1st.

Cruzâs record on immigration has been under attack in recent days after rival candidate Marco Rubio criticized him for offering an amendment during debate over the Gang of Eight immigration bill that would have granted legal status, but remove the possibility of citizenship, to individuals in the country illegally. Rubio said the amendment was proof that Cruz supported âlegalizing people who are in this country illegally."
Cruz says now the amendment was meant as a "poison pill" to kill the whole package, or at the very least as a way to expose that what Democrats really wanted was not to âbring people out of the shadows,â as they often claimed, but rather to grant citizenship to millions of future Democratic voters. By removing citizenship from the equation, Cruz allies said he was exposing Democratsâ true motives.
The media have seized on the disagreement and pressed Cruz on the issue in numerous interviews over the past week, but Senator Sessions, whose credibility on the immigration issue is unquestioned among the conservative base, has repeatedly come to Cruzâs defense.
"One of the things you've been hearing about is criticism of Ted and what he did with regard to the massive immigration bill they tried to ram through in 2013,â Sessions told the crowd on Saturday. "Let me tell you, I was there every step of the way. Ted Cruz was on my side, he fought this legislation all the way through."
Sessions would show the world how Homeland was used to target conservative Americans... Trump should consider Sessions too... or someone Sessions recommends..
Didn't Trump name Cruz when asked about VP spot.
No, he did not.
The reporter asked if he would consider any of his current opponents as VP. He replied that Cruz had been very nice to him or something to that effect. In other words, he sidestepped the question, while seeming to suggest that Cruz would be the one that he might consider.
Sessions spoke at Trump’s big Mobile rally with over 30,000 people. Perhaps Cruz is trying to lure him over to his camp?
In both cases, they were "seeming to suggest".
Good thing for Ted that Trump has pointed out all the issues Ted needed to run upon. It’s like an Avis commercial — we’re Number Two!
Similar to Trump’s comments on Oprah. “According to Donald Trump, a 2016 ticket of Trump for president and Oprah Winfrey for vice president would be a lock for the White House.
“I think Oprah would be great. I’d love to have Oprah,” Trump told ABC News. “I think we’d win easily, actually.”
I would put as AG and then to the supreme court
I’ll ask the same question about this that I ask those who promote Cruz as Trump’s running mate; why would he leave the Senate for a relatively minor position in the administration?
Good point, occurred to me, too. If the wrangles over Cruz's 2013 shamnesty amendment are any indication, the only names that keep coming up consistently in the good guys' column in the Senate are Cruz, Mike Lee, and Jeff Sessions, who is the "go-to guy" on the issue.
The only way taking one of them out of the Senate could be considered a good move would be if his next stop were the White House, or as you pointed out, the vice-presidency.
I'll help him! On weekends. And holidays.
It's completely overrun with muzzle-'ems.
I can’t remember Cruz mentioning a wall being built? Following the leader Ted?
Senate campaign 2011, on youtube— Ted said he would favor “a wall”.
Not a bad idea, not bad at all.
I’d far rather see Sessions be majority leader in the Senate.
Which the supposed “brilliant Constitution and LAW expert” apparently doesn’t know.
‘Senate campaign 2011, on youtubeâ Ted said he would favor âa wallâ.
So five years before he got in the Senate he mentioned we needed a wall built. We he sure seems to have forgotten about it till a week or two ago. It’s never been a big part of his campaign.
Its only illegal if the job offer is made as a reward for political support. In other words, Cruz is just fine to tell people that he thinks Sessions would make a great Homeland Security Secretary. What would be illegal is if he said to Sessions, endorse me and I will appoint you homeland security secretary. Basically this is prohibiting bribing with political jobs.
