After Lee Circle battle, New Orleans must grapple with other monuments

Lee Circle and three other New Orleans public spaces will be stripped of monuments related to the Confederacy after a historic City Council vote Thursday (Dec. 17). But the fate of other statues in the city should also be debated in the coming years, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said.

The council's 6-1 vote in favor of removing the four monuments put to bed six months of white-hot rhetoric, but other monument fights may be on the horizon.

When the socialists won in Spain a dozen years ago they set about removing all statues and street names dedicated to General Franco; history is written by the victors, and we’ve lost to the communists.

Yes; I wouldn’t expect the “replacement Americans” to have any regard for our history. They’ve been trafficked here in part to “re-set” our country, and we’ve been watching our culture disappear ever since.

What’s ironic was that the Confederate flag’s location in SC was already a compromise brokered in 2000.

It will be interesting to see what they do about Andrew Jackson of the “Battle of New Orleans” fame? After all he was a slave-holder and you know that means permanent banishment into the outer dark for these people! Yet he is absolutely there in N.O. history and hard to work him into ‘non-person’ status!

He will be swept away with the others, as the “New Orleans” he defended bears little resemblance to that city today. I expect even cities will be renamed as well. Nowadays there are less and less people that can even pronounce his name: “Anrew Yaxon”

There is a reason they call it the “dark side.”

What these historical illiterates do not know is that these monuments were erected at a time when the country wanted to unite in order to face big challenges. Picture Confederate veterans lining the railroad saluting the Rough Riders as they proceeded to the port of Tampa. Or bases named for Confederate generals that were built to train the Doughboys before they headed Over There. These monuments were all part of this. During WWI, Civil War veterans were the same age as Vietnam veterans are today. These monuments to both sides helped unite this country into a world power, in a small way granted, but that was their purpose at the time.

Were the Ku Klux Klan Democrats who put up these monuments interested in "uniting the country"? Hardly. They were terrorists who seized power by murdering elected Republicans. It is a grave scandal that the US allowed the Democrats to rule many "Solid South" states by force for almost a century.

History is a distraction and obstruction to the implementation of Utopia.

New Orleans is the OTHER Detroit.

If you want to see, smell, & taste filth, visit New Orleans.

Down in the Quarter, business owners have to wash their store fronts each morning with bleach to remove the vomit & spilled liquor. The smell is awful - it will ruin your breakfast appetite.

Leave your nice clothes at home. The better you dress the more likely you will be mugged or murdered. Leave the nice shoes at home, too. The streets are filthy. Your best bet is to dress as poorly as you can stand to avoid theft & scams.

If you are thinking of New Orleans for a vacation, think of Cleveland, Newark, or Oakland instead.

Tear down the references to history in a town where tourism (much of it based on that history) is a major industry.

Brilliant.

Nikki Haley is an absolute traitor to the South just like the New Orleans leadership. Monuments containing the founding fathers and Andrew Jackson will be next.

Knock it off. Most Southerners today are proud of their monuments to the Confederacy. At least those in the South were smart enough to eventually abandon the Democratic party.

A city whose 4th tourist draw is history is going to erase it. Smart move NOLA dumbasses.

As I said on another thread, NOLA will no longer be a weekend destination for me. Dollars spent by me there in the future---- $0

What a jerk. So tell me by answering yes or no, would you feel it would have been justice if Lee and Davis had been hanged for treason?

New Orleans is the OTHER Detroit

Tourism has kept NOLA one slight notch above Detroit.

Add

(1) Mardi Gras has become increasingly dangerous. (2) Post Katrina thugs have become bolder (3) NOLA's short sighted attempt to erase history.

Yep, NOLA will become Detroit, and maybe even worse.

You have a demented view of history.

The deep South is now solidly Republican. Conservatives like me would have been Democrats too in 1876. Perhaps you are not familiar with the crimes of Black troops during the so-called Reconstruction.

Maybe you should worry a bit more about Iowa since it goes for Obama.
