Rubio, Cruz Owned the Debate

Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz were the big winners of the latest Republican presidential debate-so say political thinkers I interviewed following the battle.

While Donald Trump's statement that he would support the eventual GOP nominee was certainly newsworthy, it was the clash of sons of Cuban immigrants and the scenario of a nomination fight coming down to Rubio and Cruz that captivated almost everyone.

“I thought Trump did great last night. He looked presidential”. ~ Rudy Giulini.

TRUMP has showmanship and a ‘fatherly’ demeanor.
TED CRUZ really shined last night.

--I think either Rubio or Cruz would crush her. Trump? not so much except for being more blunt about her corruption and incompetence. The others would be more diplomatic.

Trump would put Clinton perpetually on the defensive in a way that has never been done before. Trump would not be afraid to 'go there'.

Chris Christie said it very well - Listening to them, you’d think none of the people on that stage were actually in Washington for any of this!

re:”Britt Hume will have Fox News replay the immigration tape on a loop to get rid of him.”

Can’t decide if you are establishment or for Hillary, standing by your man Hume. You obviously aren’t conservative. And you would never support someone who played both sides of issues so many times we have lost count like Trump, that would be inconsistent and unfaithful to your purity of principles. So who are you supporting?

You’re wrong, Rubio would keep the base home like Romney. Rubio would lose to Hillary because running to the mushy middle to attract Democrats is how we lose every time...Dole..McCain..Romney.
_________________________________________________________

See, you are thinking rationally. That is your mistake. If Democrats and, especially, independents were rational they would vote on the issues and conservatives would win every election. Obviously, they do not.

They vote on style and who they like, not on what candidates have to say, especially the independents. The vast majority of voters right now couldn’t even tell you who is running for president let alone what any candidate’s stance on the issues are with the exception of Trump — who runs 24/7 on the news.

People on FR are not typical voters. Think like the rest of the population — better yet, don’t think at all. Now you are “thinking” like a typical voter.

Now, think about every presidential race since Reagan ran against Carter. Who won? The more “stylish” candidate, regardless of party has always won. The only exception was when too unstylish candidates, Bush and Gore, ran. They tied in both votes and (un)likability.

Losers: Carter, Bush Sr., Dole, Kerry, McCain, Romney. Their policies sucked, true, but they were also surpassed on the style/likable factor by Reagan, Clinton, W., and Obama.

Policies DO NOT MATTER in general elections. Heck, if people think you are “cool” or have style I imagine they might even vote for a marxist muslim who has crippled the US economy and weakened the country like no other president in history. Oh.. wait.. they did.

I don’t agree. I think all but Trump would keep it civil and call her Secretary Clinton and basically treat her like Margaret Thacher. I think Trump would lower the boom on her and bring up not only her current scandals but every scandal her and her crooked husband have been involved in last 30 years. He would die it to her honestly and incompetence. Trump has the best lawyers and private investigators in the world working for him. He knows what he’s doing.

I agree. That IS a nightmare scenario. I see no way, however, for Rubio to emerge from the GOP primaries. He doesn’t even campaign. His strategy is to hope that Trump and Cruz destroy themselves/each other and leave him alone at the top.

It is a stupid strategy.

I do not see him switching parties. But, anything is possible, I suppose.

Trump is divisive. You either love him or hate him. He has an uphill battle if he goes to the general. Lucky for him, he was TV star so he gets a lot of the LIV voters on that alone.

Cruz can talk a great game but really needs to go to charm school to beat Hillary (even though she is as charming a decaying dead dog on the side of the road) because Cruz cannot come across as a know-it all or even a tad bit condescending which he sometimes does.

Rush was brilliant today in this analysis of the debate.

Here's his analysis of Trump: This Moment Explains Why Trump Doesn't Get Hurt by the Things He Says.

And I think Rush's point is that behind the words, the public can readily detect there's a man of solid experience, honesty, and character.

What administrative experience does Rubio really have? He graduated from law school, was a Florida state rep, and has been a Senator for a couple of years.

If you're a magnificent office seeker, you'd better be "polished" and darned good at explaining what a "triad nuclear strategy" is about.  Incidentally, that "triad" question from Hugh Hewitt looked like a setup question for Rubio to make sound smart.

Marco Rubio waded too far into the deep end playing Marco Polo with Sen. Ted Cruz on illegal immigration.
