Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz were the big winners of the latest Republican presidential debate-so say political thinkers I interviewed following the battle.
While Donald Trump's statement that he would support the eventual GOP nominee was certainly newsworthy, it was the clash of sons of Cuban immigrants and the scenario of a nomination fight coming down to Rubio and Cruz that captivated almost everyone.

Cruz cleaned amnesty man Rubio’s clock last night.
Rubio is all delivery - confident, assertive, empty. Thousands of words and he still hasn’t really said what he would do as president.
Although I have a pretty good idea.
Britt Hume will have Fox News replay the immigration tape on a loop to get rid of him.
Rubio the same
I agree, Rubio is very polished when he speaks - calm, relaxed, passionate and eloquent even. But I’m not sure if there’s substance behind him. And I wish he’d let at least one hair be out of place.

Bingo.
We will see how far this gets him. So far, not very.
But he is still the Establishment s best hope.
RUBIO? Was this guy even watching the debate? Cruz and Paul destroyed Rubio last night. They finally got a Gang of 8 question to Rubio and I seriously thought he was going to tap out.
Rubio: Let everyone who wants to come here in. Then, go into any country we want and kick their asses just because I want to.
His delivery and style are brilliant but his content is a nightmare. Cruz’s fireman to arsonist comparison was spot on.
Morning Consult - Weds, 16-Dec

vote? (N=1,530)
Jeb Bush 7%
Ben Carson 10%
Chris Christie 3%
Ted Cruz 9%
Carly Fiorina 3%
Mike Huckabee 3%
Rand Paul 3%
Marco Rubio 7%
Donald Trump 40%
Lindsey Graham 1%
George Pataki 1%
John Kasich 2%
Rick Santorum 1%
Someone Else 1%
Donât Know 11%
My take as well. It was Cruz-Trump-Paul with everyone else trailing badly.
I chuckled when Rubio said the takeaway from the gang of eight episode was ‘people don’t trust washington to keep it’s word’ when it was he, more than any one politician, who was the personification of washington where the amnesty bill was concerned.
Here’s a little exercise: Try to visualize each of these candidates in a one-on-one general election debate with Clinton. Then ask yourself who would be able to clean her clock and who would not.
I think either Rubio or Cruz would crush her. Trump? not so much except for being more blunt about her corruption and incompetence. The others would be more diplomatic.
Rubio has a built-in teleprompter and he just recites his lines.
Yep, how anyone could think that Rubio did anything but hurt himself last night is beyond me.
Yes, Rubio ‘owned’ the debate... but not in a good way IMO.
My men’s bible study watched the debate as a group Tuesday... they all nodded in agreement when I pointed out how Rubio kept referring to THE SHOOTER in San Bernardino who was an American citizen...
It was a poorly executed Jedi Mind Trick trying to make the 2nd shooter, and the failure of our immigration policy that led the murder of 14 people, disappear.
I agree, Rubio is very polished when he speaks - calm, relaxed, passionate and eloquent even. But Iâm not sure if thereâs substance behind him.

I know this sounds bad, especially from a Cruz supporter, but Rubio would easily beat Hillary Clinton. He would win in a landslide much more than any other Republican candidate. He would demolish Hillary in a debate. He is exactly what you say: polished, relaxed, passionate and eloquent. In other words, he is everything she is not.
He would attract Democrats for those reasons. He would also attract them because of his liberalism on so many issues. He is the perfect Democrat candidate when it comes to substance. He would attract blue color Dems with tough talk. He would attract the authoritarian Dems with his big brother citizen spy network. He would attract the rest of them on his United States of Mexico.
You’re wrong, Rubio would keep the base home like Romney. Rubio would lose to Hillary because running to the mushy middle to attract Democrats is how we lose every time...Dole..McCain..Romney.
