Elon Musk and other big tech names are worried that humanity will develop artificial intelligence so smart it becomes a threat to humanity itself â think self-aware killer robots that realize their best course of action is to wipe out mankind.
Or, basically, terminators.
Musk has been raising the alarm about this possibility for a while now. At an MIT event last year, he called artificial intelligence humanity's "biggest existential threat" and compared it to "summoning the demon." Musk was also one of a slew of scientists and tech leaders, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Stephen Hawking, who signed onto a letter calling for artificial intelligence research to be aimed at creating systems that "do what we want them to do," rather than, say, killing us all.
Even Bill Gates said he doesn't "understand why some people are not concerned" about the possibility of a rogue, self-aware robot in a reddit chat in January.
This anti-Skynet contingent is increasingly putting their money where their dystopian fear is. Musk and a group of other big tech names including fellow PayPal co-founder and investor Peter Thiel as well as Amazon Web Services just committed $1 billion to a new group called OpenAI.
It's a nonprofit company specifically aimed at responsible artificial intelligence development. "It's hard to fathom how much human-level AI could benefit society, and it's equally hard to imagine how much it could damage society if built or used incorrectly," a blog post announcing the venture said. Its chief technology officer is Greg Brockman, who formerly held the same role at digital payments company Stripe, and Musk and YCombinator President Sam Altman are serving as co-chairs.

This may or may not be hyperbole from a brilliant kook like Musk. However, it is instructive to note how Musk is going about addressing that threat: With private funding.
More likely this lot will be responsible for having created and empowered them.
Google owns Boston Dynamics by the way. This is their "Atlas" Robot.
Wintermute.
Boston dynamics reminds me of Massive Dynamic which was also based in Boston...
Just watched “ex machina” on Amazon, a fantasy tale of AI seducing, murdering and escaping into the world.
This fear’s real.
It’s not another dem lie like global warming...
And it could happen within our lifetime.
Odd to see the Washington Post care about something real for a change.
Eric Schmidt (Google, Alphabet) says not to fear AI.
(somehow I envision him making police robots)
"Gaining a comprehensive scientific understanding of human cognition is one of the hardest problems there is. We continue to make encouraging progress. But by the end of the century, we believe, we will still be wondering if the singularity is near."

Was it any good?
The truth is, if we need to worry about this:
We'll already be finished before the AI gets around to creating this:
In other words, sci-fi aside, a hostile superior intelligence will have little use for sexy robots.
Does that include the terminators wearing beards and carrying Syrian passports?
Yes. Very good. But think of it as ‘cerebral/Art house” more than Hollywood. Ynless you have an interest in that sort of thing (AI/Cyberpunk like Neuromancer) you may not like it.
If we had the ability to power a terminator with a small power source, the energy problem would be over.
I'd love to be able to drop in 100 years from now and see what happened to mankind......
If it's an online game, does it require you to download the program to your computer and if so, does it cost money?
Since it appears to be version 4, does one need to start from the very beginning with version 1?
Is it an action game that requires finger dexterity on your keyboard in order to move the players and shoot and dodge?
Let me know, I'm curious........
Thanks
Console (New xboxes and PS4, and Computer. No online. Not really a twitch game like Call of duty. more Role playing but with action aspects. It’s a hybrid. Needs a good computer to run the PC version as it’s pretty graphics intensive.
One can start at 4 no problem. Each of them is pretty stand alone. 3 and “New Vegas are like 4 but will run on 4 year old vomputers easily.
1 and 2 go back to the late 90s and were turn based RPG games.
Lots of fun overall. It has a rich, well thought out plot and history. Many, many paralells to the world we see today. Just substitute some names and it’s scarily like our world...or where it’s headed.
Check Youtube. Lots of ‘Fallout history” type videos. Interesting even for non game nerds.
Not me. I don’t want to come back.
What's a vomputer?

Excuse me for being so blunt but I have no frickin idea what you're talking about and that's why folks like me just haven't gotten into your video games............
Thanks for your attempted help tho.........
