Assault weapons were banned for 10 years until Congress, in bipartisan obeisance to the gun lobby, let the law lapse in 2004. As a result, gun manufacturers have been allowed to sell all manner of war weaponry to civilians, including the super destructive .50-caliber sniper rifle, which an 18-year-old can easily buy in many places even where he or she must be 21 to buy a simpler handgun. Why any civilian would need this weapon, designed to pierce concrete bunkers and armored personnel carriers, is a question that should be put to the gun makers who profit from them and the politicians who shamelessly do their bidding.
The industry's sales pitches in magazines and on the Internet play off popular fears generated by the very shooting sprees made possible by their assault weapons, and use the imagery of war in general and the "war on terror" in particular.

Because that's just the kind of chit politicians would be hiding in when the balloon goes up.
Meh, doesn’t come with a suppressor for silent killing, don’t you know.
Pathetic Leftists.
Yeah, but it has night-vision, GPS guided, target-locking laser sights!
Besides it’s so loud that after you fire the first round everyone for 15 miles is rendered permanently deaf.
M388 Davy Crockett Nuclear Projectile
Maxed out my credit cards but it's worth it.
Can't wait to see the look on the RSO's face when I bring these to the range. :-)
Actually, I think it’s about all 3, especially the last two.
Though I did use one to accidently plunk the baseball cap guy at long range -- and ended up fighting all three tribes in the Zion wilderness.
I don't consider and AR "pistol" a pistol because it has a 10 inch barrel. It is the goobberment that says that it's a pistol.

The rifle is expensive, but the ammo is pretty cheap in bulk . . . $1.85 a round . . . if you buy 9,600 rounds for $17,760. I can see an 18 y/o wanting to have one. Isn’t that what credit cards are for?
You forgot about the compass in the stock.
Well, I hope you escaped with your life!
I think they are talking about the FN 5.7, and the armor piercing ammo is restricted already.
“I suppose we shouldn’t expect much better when the Times turns its collective hand to crude propaganda, a thing that has happened far too much of late. But it doesn’t really matter. Anyone with enough knowledge in the field even to shop for such an item will read this sort of thing and laugh. “
It is a sign of desperation. Their more subtle, mind altering “manufacturing of consent” does not work anymore. They are circling the drain, and their screams of unbelief are lovely to the ears.
I pray they all find Jesus, and turn their lives around. Working hard to destroy Western Civilization is no way to go through life.
And if you shoot 9k rounds of .50 BMG through a rifle with a shoulder stock you probably better set aside $75K or so for rotator cuff surgery down the line.
Oh, wait, my 0bamaCare will cover that! /s
“Why any civilian would need this weapon...”
Ditto...FUNYT
It’s the Bill of Rights, Numbnuts NYT...Not the Bill of Needs...
The author of this screed can go screw him/herself; and I’d wager in this case it’s actually anatomically possible...
Whenever I’m called upon to demolish a reenforced concrete bunker, I always reach for my GawdAwful Mk VII .50 rifle. It’s loud, it’s obnoxious, and it kicks like a crazed mule, but it gets the job done. And really, isn’t that what we all want in a personal weapon of mass destruction? ;^)
For $12,281 (MSRP) I can think of may, many other things that an 18 year old would want to buy that would impress girls more than a $12,291 (MSRP) rifle.
That's presuming that our 18 year old is normosexual, as are 97% of 18 year old boys outside of New York. I'm pretty sure nobody can buy one in New York City -- and if you could, where would you shoot it ? I'm also fairly sure one has never been used in the commission of a crime. So it poses exactly zero danger to the weenies at New York Times.
Gay bars in Manhattan are infinitely more dangerous than Barrett rifles.
The editorial staff must be jealous because someone compared the price of Ruger and Smith & Wesson stock to the New York Times.
NYT goes full retard.
Yes, folks, the NYT is really that stupid.
I routinely use a .58 caliber rifle. It even has the awful name of the state that flies the Confederate Battle Flag. Its a Mississippi Rifle and one preferred by the evil Jefferson Davis.
