Depends on how often it’s happened. My understanding is quite a lot and they’ve been protesting. Eventually you realize protests aren’t accomplishing anything.
Actually you just backed up my assertion that doing so is basically an act of war. Turkey and Greece have been in a mess for decades... really centuries. One of these days there will be a war between them.
Correct. Here is what you said.
"you don't fly armed planes over somebody else's airspace without permission, ever."
THEN
"They do it all the time. And sometimes the other country gets sick of it and shoots them down."
How do you resolve those two apparently inconsistent statements ? Do you not see why I would question that ? You were pretty specific about your use of EVER.
It's not that I don't understand what you are trying to say, it's how you put it.
It’s a simple concept, flying armed planes over somebody else’s country without permission is an act of aggression. Yes countries do it all the time, and they know that when they do it they are committing an act of aggression. And they know that eventually somebody is going to shoot their plane down. It’s just playing “made you flinch” on the school yard, you shouldn’t do it, everybody knows it’s an act of aggression, and when eventually one of those bullied kids pops you one, nobody blames them.
Thanks. That’s much better than your original statement and makes sense.
Let me ask you this... do you think Turkey did it just because they were tired of Russia flying over a contested area, or because Russia was bombing the livelihood of Erdogan’s son ?
All of the above. Turkey wants to be a bully country. And the Kurds can tell you they’re pretty good at it. It’s part of why they’re backing ISIS, they’re trying to move up the food chain. But they’re still a jr bully, and there’s very a 2nd tier bully hates more than being reminded that as far as 1st tier bullies are concerned they don’t rate.
Actually you just backed up my assertion that doing so is basically an act of war.
You agree that Turkey has recently committed thousands of acts of war and that war should result.
Turkey has committed sufficient acts of war against Greece, Armenia, Kurdish civilians, Syria and now Russia that you may get your wish.
Turkey will pay a price, and we will see if any NATO states get sucked in.
So far Russia is paying. Putin blinked, there’s no other interpretation. He was all fire and vengeance, now it’s “economic sanctions”.
I don’t wish for a war. But it’s there. Truthfully there’s been multiple wars going on in that region for a long time. They’ve just finally boiled up to the point where even Americans need to pay attention.
You are probably right.
How long is your attention span ?
Long enough to remember just how effective “economic sanctions” proved to be against Iraq and Iran and... even Russia. You do remember that they’re under economic sanctions right now for invading the Ukraine right? Boy that sure has put Putin in his place. And it be almost that effective against Turkey too.
You noticed Putin is winning his chess games. Expect Erdogan to pay dearly for shooting down a Russian plane; Putin is not Obama.
He WAS winning. Then he decided to get into a mid-east mess. And now he’s losing. He’s lost a passenger jet and a military jet, and he’s now been reduced to “economic sanctions”. Erdogan has already won this encounter, he got to shoot down a Russian plane, now the Russians are no longer flying over Turkish airspace, and Erdogan’s entire punishment is nothing. Putin ain’t Obama, but that doesn’t mean he’s actually smart, or winning. He’s an egomaniac, and kind of an ass, and he’s overstepped his skills.
