I told Smokey Robinson's story a few years ago. This was a Holland brothers and Lamont Dozier tune, the songwriters who were riding high at Motown. Thanks to the whole "black Bob Dylan" thing that the Four Tops had created during the summer, Smokey was in the same groove.
