In an undated handout photo, a plaque at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., commemorates a stretch of the Potomac as the âRiver of Bloodâ due to casualties there during the Civil War.
Between the 14th hole and the 15th tee of one of the club's two courses, Mr. Trump installed a flagpole on a stone pedestal overlooking the Potomac, to which he affixed a plaque purportedly designating "The River of Blood."
"Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot," the inscription reads. "The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as 'The River of Blood.'"
The inscription, beneath his family crest and above Mr. Trump's full name, concludes: "It is my great honor to have preserved this important section of the Potomac River!"
Like many of Mr. Trump's claims, the inscription was evidently not fact-checked.
"No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there," said Richard Gillespie, the executive director of the Mosby Heritage Area Association, a historical preservation and education group devoted to an 1,800-square-mile section of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, including the Lowes Island site.
"The only thing that was remotely close to that," Mr. Gillespie said, was 11 miles up the river at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in 1861, a rout of Union forces in which several hundred were killed.

Since this is so important, you should not sleep until it is.
History is history.. LIBERALS are FULL of $HIT.
Liberals are always upset about something someone said, or didn’t say, or something that they think someone else thinks. They are the most unhappy bunch of lunatics in the world. They all belong in straightjackets and in padded cells.
Well of course he should. The fact that it doesn't matter to his supporters is what chaps you. Keep trying though something is bound to make a difference sooner or later.
Liberals are always upset. If there is nothing to get upset over, they will fabricate a reason. I recall them claiming an innocent Penney’s tea kettle looked like Hitler.
This incident is a dog bites man story. It points out that Trump has no class. He is an ignorant boor. It is almost funny in a way. A historical marker to an event that never happened. But nobody should expect otherwise. Did you see the interview with Barbara Walters. Did you see Trump’s apartment. Who is his decorator, Tony Montana. All he needed to cap it off would have been a velvet painting of Elvis. We have sunk real low as a people. We used to follow real intellects like Jefferson, Clay, Lincoln, etc. But today, my God it is shameful. Trump, Herself, Comrade Sanders, Carson. We have truly become dirtbag nation.
wonder what would happen if every trump supporter took every opportunity to let the media know how much they support trump.
it’s a psy-op...
:-)
You're right. We should give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's an error. Now that it's been brought to Trump's attention I'm sure he will rush to correct it.
Is that you Carl Rove? Very petty criticism.
Trump exaggerating or embellishing, or even making up, the truth is nothing to be surprised about anymore. I'll sleep just fine.
“Mr. Trump installed a flagpole...
Did he mix the cement himself?
Has he ever even been to Sterling Va?” â mbarker12474
Is that you, Carl Rove, very petty criticism. (Or maybe its that faithful, fruitcake critic, GeronL (short for Gerontological Loser) trolling under a different name. Having fun here.
You’re seriously not helping to cause.
If this was a thing with Cruz, I would have brushed it off as nonsense as well. But you guys need everything you can get, no matter how pathetic.
Experience taught me a few things.
One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper.
The second is that you're generally better off sticking with what you know.
And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you don't make.Donald Trump
God bless Trump.
It isn’t nonsense for anyone when they make a big ostentatious point of stating publicly how greatly honored I am to do such and such and show through your actions later that in reality you couldn’t be pressed to give a crap.
And I certainly wouldn't want to miss that. So be sure and let me know when he changes it. Or even admits it is incorrect to begin with.
LoL!
At Shiloh, TN, there is a pond known as The Bloody Pond.
I’m 69. My parents used to take me to Shiloh (my great
great grandfather was a Rebel at Shiloh). Back then,
The Bloody Pond WAS very dark, deep crimson red. Has faded
over the past century. In his words to my grandmother,
“Izora, it was awful, just awful, the worst thing I’ve ever
seen in my life. I don’t know for sure if I killed anybody
or not; but don’t see how I could have kept from it because
it was such a mess!” - Daddy always said, “War is hell!”
He was a combat veteran of WWII, in the worst of it and he
knew.
