In an undated handout photo, a plaque at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., commemorates a stretch of the Potomac as the âRiver of Bloodâ due to casualties there during the Civil War.
Between the 14th hole and the 15th tee of one of the club's two courses, Mr. Trump installed a flagpole on a stone pedestal overlooking the Potomac, to which he affixed a plaque purportedly designating "The River of Blood."
"Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot," the inscription reads. "The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as 'The River of Blood.'"
The inscription, beneath his family crest and above Mr. Trump's full name, concludes: "It is my great honor to have preserved this important section of the Potomac River!"
Like many of Mr. Trump's claims, the inscription was evidently not fact-checked.
"No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there," said Richard Gillespie, the executive director of the Mosby Heritage Area Association, a historical preservation and education group devoted to an 1,800-square-mile section of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, including the Lowes Island site.
"The only thing that was remotely close to that," Mr. Gillespie said, was 11 miles up the river at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in 1861, a rout of Union forces in which several hundred were killed.

Looks like someone at CNBC had some strawberries stolen.
And I'll bet that the monument doesn't say, "On this spot the flag was raised over Iwo Jima." Trump seems to have an amazing talent for seeing things that never happened.
Hahaaa...
The GOPe and their ‘road map’ ; the RINO’s not being able to stop Trump; the ‘government controlled’ media; the talking heads, the CofC, politicians, all of them; just are pulling their hair out trying to figure what to do about Trump...
There isn't anything they can do, because he has the Blue Collar American People behind him and guess what, we have been lied to, walked on, abused, thrown away, and we are not going anywhere except to the Oval Office with President Trump!!!
GO TRUMP GO!!!
The plaque reads "on this spot" which is not true.
The Civil War really happened.
Real people died in historically recorded places.
If the plaque said: "eleven miles away from here" instead of "on this spot" there would be no problem.
But as an American, I have a real problem with people falsifying and distorting American military history.
Take your nitpicking bullshit and stuff it in your turkey.
Happy Thanksgiving.
thumbs up!
I keep forgetting that facts have no meaning for Trump or his supporters.
Unless there are authenticated maps of the battle, then there is no proof it didn't happen.
I recently read a Stonewall Jackson biography which mentioned that it took several months for Stonewall to put together battle reports.
Stonewall was so behind, he had an author on staff attempt to put together very detailed descriptions of the battle. Once completed, Stonewall eliminated huge sections of the reports and kept them very minimal.
No, it’s about you TDS sufferers never missing the slightest opportunity to raise your hackles about Trump.
Conservationists are claiming that he cut down the trees HIMSELF, so I guess one could believe he mixed the cement himself.
Has he ever even been to Sterling Va?
At the link below is a picture of him standing on that very golf course... so the answer is YES.
In Renovation of Golf Club, Donald Trump Also Dressed Up History
Ohhh the Trump haters don’t want to hear that, they want to keep shrieking about Trump being ‘inaccurate’ or ‘lying’ or whatever suits their conniption fit of the moment.
If Trump really wants to impress people, and Lord knows Trump lives to impress people, then why not take the current plaque down and replace it with one that says, "On this spot Robert Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant" because after all the surrender took place just down the road a piece? Or better yet, put up a second plaque saying, "On this spot George Washington threw a dollar across the Potomac" because after all nobody who might question it was actually there? And how did they know that Washington didn't?
Sorry to disappoint but my hackles are still lowered. It's just yet another example of Trump being Trump, and Trump fanatics believing anything. Both of which are very amusing.
I’m not so sure I’m the one requiring professional help.
Incredible as it may seem, there are still residents in Northern Virginia who must travel more than 500 yards to find a 7-11, and a full size shopping mall can often be two or more miles away. Loudoun and Fairfax counties are still addressing their critical mall shortage. A golf course is probably as close to open space and wildlife habitat as the area will tolerate.
As well as a few skirmishes up and down the river bank. We are talking about calvary units here fighting on horse back led by General JEB Stuart... Not Yeb!
