Following their 106-year custodianship of the Alamo, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) are preparing for an early 2016 court date to block Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush's efforts to claim ownership of the DRT's private library collection. The collection which includes books, maps and other artifacts from the state's earliest days has been assembled and managed by the Daughters since the 1950s. The GLO's actions have been considered by some as a taking of private property by the government. The Daughter's transitioned custodianship of the Alamo mission to the state in July of this year.
The origins of the DRT Library and the 38,000-piece collection began in 1945 with an individual donation of a number of historic artifacts linked to the early days of the Republic of Texas. When the state refused to provide funding to house and maintain the collection, DRT members helped raise private funds for the construction of the current library building located on the Alamo grounds. The construction was completed in the early 1950s. Since that time, the DRT Library, which contains the largest portion of the DRT's collection, has allowed historians, authors and others interested in Texas history the opportunity to conduct research on the Alamo grounds.
On March 23, 2015, the DRT filed a lawsuit in the 407th District Court in Bexar County to block the GLO's move to take ownership of the DRT Library Collection.
Upon staking its claim to the collection contents, the GLO ordered DRT staff to cancel appointments and close the library on weekends. The GLO then informed the DRT Library staff that they would be required to become state employees, and then, on August 24, locked them out of the library when they refused to do so.

Bush Defends ‘Little Brown Ones’ Term for Grandchildren, Tells ‘Pride and Love’
August 17, 1988|Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS â A bristling Vice President George Bush today defended his description of his three Mexican-American grandchildren as “the little brown ones,” saying, “This heart knows nothing but pride and love” for the children.
“For anyone to suggest that that comment of pride is anything other than what it was, I find it personally offensive,” Bush said at a news conference with his running mate, Sen. Dan Quayle of Indiana.
Bush on Tuesday introduced his grandchildren to President Reagan at a brief airport meeting.
“These are Jebby’s kids from Florida, the little brown ones,” the vice president said. The three youngsters are the children of Bush’s son, Jeb, and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Ayn Rand described George P Bush perfectly with the term “looter”.
Perhaps George P is doing us a favor by doing something that will end his prospects for higher office.
All I can say is if the DOR were tuned into Free Republic they could have become politically astute and would have been well warned to Stay “Out The Bush’s”!
Don’t forget GP’s dad is a carpet-bagger and his “mum” is a foreigner.
George P Bush: Make Texas Mexico Again.
Wonder what is going on? Where is the collection Phil Collins Alamo gave to the state Land Commissioner Jerry Patteson back in 2014?
Sounds like the DTR libaray is a separate collection that Bush as the new state Land Commissioner wants to add to the state collection.
Perfect time for a Bush to try and flex his muscles when his father is a laughing stock.
Exactly. DTR has done an excellent job. There is no performance reason for a bush to step in.
Get out the bushes.
Sounds like an Obama Mini-me.
STOP BUSH ALERT!
Bush, Inc., like Liberals, believes nothing belongs to the people, but what government says can belong to the people, just like their donors, connections, socialist styled pals do.
I don’t quite get why if it isn’t broke, the guvmint just must interfere and butt in, with the artifacts, historic papers, etc.
The building, the Alamo, desperately needs to be a guided tour only, one that gives due respect for the hallowed ground that it is, and not allow the hawking of merchandise and peanut brittle, like any Walmart on Saturday. This condition is unacceptable and disgusting.
Do the tours include the basement?
What tours? There are none. It’s pretty much a free for all. That was my point.

I believe this is what the basement comment was aimed at. It’s a joke from the movie “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” where Pee Wee Herman goes to the Alamo looking for his stolen bike and asks if they are going to tour the basement. He was told his bike was in the basement of the Alamo.
Sorry, I missed the connection, totally. LOL! I have never seen Pee Wee Herman. That explains a lot. :D
bump
Not only NO! But HELL NO!
Ok, fine the DRT dropped the ball and had to give up custodial ship of the Alamo but the contents of the library is theirs.
First, GP is off on daddy’s campaign trail the minute he got elected to office and neglected his job. He should have resigned on that alone since he wasn’t doing his duty to Texans and wasting our tax dollars. Now that daddy’s campaign is in the dumpster, he’s back trying to steal from the DRT. I - don’t - think - so.
