About 50 wealthy, political savvy dudes wrote the constitution. There is an awesome summary of their proceedings called "54 Men and the Constitution". (I think that's the right number).

It even predicted the dilemma that would occur when there are more takers (47%) than givers. You can read it at google books. It's worth the read.

It also mentions that there is no check on the Supreme Court.

Carson is probably confused about Jefferson’s role in the writing of the Declaration of Independence in which he played a major role versus the drafting of the Constitution where he was absent. As others have pointed out, Jefferson was in France at the time the Constitution was being written. Madison, Hamilton, and Jay were important figures in the development of the Constitution. So was George Washington and several others including John Rutledge, James Wilson, Charles Pinkney, Gouverneur Morris (chief draftsman of the final document), Edmund Randolph, and George Mason. The Constitution was the product of many minds.

As to Jefferson, it is interesting to consider what he considered his greatest accomplishments. He wrote the epitaph on his tombstone which states:
Here was buried
Thomas Jefferson
Author of the Declaration of American Independence
of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom
& Father of the University of Virginia

It is noteworthy he did not consider serving as President of the United State as significant.

Aww, come on...

He simply mixed up the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

This is potato/potatoe gotcha all over again.

Carson is not one of my top choices, but knowing trivia from history is not at the top of my priority list. Like most on FR, I know a lot about the writing of the Declaration and of the Constitution, and I know Carson’s answer was imperfect, but I don’t consider knowledge of that sort of detail important in a president. What matters to me is whether the candidate values the Constitution (Cruz) or wants to trash it (Obama).

Obvious slip of the tongue, each candidate has every little word they speak parsed, especially Republicans. We don’t need to help the enemy...Carson is without a doubt very well educated...he made a simple mistake.
