Fleming sounds the best of the group. Abraham and Graves are too new to analyze. Boustany and Scalise ought to be dismissed out of hand. John Kennedy was a novelty, but I’d expect he’d be no better than your average establishment figure in DC, so that’s out. Scott Angelle was happy to see his people go to Edwards, so he can get stuffed. Dardenne openly went for Edwards, so any future races for him he can forget about.

Maybe Edwards can be lured out of the state for long periods and Nungesser can screw with him as acting Governor (like Mike Curb used to do with Jerry Brown in his 2nd term in CA).

One thing to note: this will be the first time that all the statewide offices will be Republican with a Democrat Governor. If Edwards is as “Conservative” as he claims to be, one wonders if he’ll pull a Buddy Roemer or Buddy Caldwell ?

Hard to imagine the rats carrying it for President so I’d call it safe R there, certainly not “purple”, I don’t like “purple” as a political adjective irregardless of whether you accept the newspeak “Red for Republican” nonsense or not, swing state works for me. Dems aren’t taking back the state leg either. It definitely deserves the label of “Republican state”. Every state has some unique circumstances.

For mosts state Governor is an office the weaker party is frequently competitive in.

Deep South has a lot of Blacks, meaning a dem has a solid base and can win if enough White idiots vote against their interests for someone who tricks them into buying the “moderate/conservative democrat” song.

Still not sure why Jindal (ran afoul the stinking unions to the point they launched a media jihad against him?) is so unpopular but that appears to be the prime reason Vitter lost this. Isolated circumstance, likely one term rat bastard. 4 years of him appointing Marxist Blacks to things should lead Whites to bounce him.

Was Edwards lying? I mean, how can he have those positions and be a Democrat unless he is lying?

It doesn’t work that way in Louisiana. The LT Governor is a figurehead unless the Governor actually leaves office. About all he does is promote travel and tourism in the state, but even that is purely customary, and not a legal mandate of his office.

Jindal has been running all over the country for two years, and his LT Guv, Jay Dardenne (a fellow GOPer, but a political rival) had no authority to act in his absence.

one result of the edwards win is that medicaid expansion is coming next year to the bayou state.

Orleans Parish is New Orleans and they are usually the last Parish to send in their vote count. Just like most other states that have a heavily Democratic city that sit on the votes waiting to see how to manipulate the votes in their favor.

I agree. His ads were lame. He never produced any specifics regarding Edwards’ voting record.

How do you know he will be tough on abortion? The head of the Louisiana Planned Parenthood had a yard sign for Edwards.

Well, Vitter is doing the party a big favor by not running again for the Senate.

Ok seems 32 is the high (notwithstanding inauguration dates) of the 50 state era.

Since the 2014 election (+ 2 net), we’ll maintain the number of 31, exchanging LA for KY this year.

After 1994 was just 30, we picked up LA in 1995, and gained Arkansas in July 1996 when Huckabee replaced Jim Guy Tucker in Arkansas. The ‘96 (exchanged NH for WV) and ‘97 (no change, held VA and NJ), elections maintained that number of 32, 1998 reduced it by 1.

We also had 32 after the 1969 elections (gained VA and NJ) until the 1970 election when the dems scored a big net gain.

Gotta go back to the 20’s to maybe have more than 32 (of 48). Party high in terms of percentage was certainly after the Civil war with the Southern states being readmitted and going GOP, that was also the democrat nadir in Congress.

Some of what was put out is probably true. The ad his wife cut sounded very sincere with respect to pro-life. She says that she was advised to consider an abortion because their daughter was going to be born with a birth defect. When she told him, he didn’t hesitate to tell her that they would love the child and raise the child, who is now a grown woman. Abortion was not even considered. Not one bit of that ad sounded untrue or embellished. It was a very powerful ad.

Pro-life is a probably THE major social issue in Louisiana, but that is only one issue. He is apparently very leftist in overall policy.

I expect him to be another bad and corrupt governor in general. Something about him really puts my hackles up.

Boustany and Angelle, hell no. Kennedy no also. Scalise of course won’t run.

Fleming stands out of the best of those mentioned. Don’t know about the freshman either.

I doubt Fleming is to Vitter’s right but I’d settle for keeping some scuzz who’s much worse out. Boustany was content to see a 2nd dem elected to the House from LA if it meant a safer seat for him, fail. And Angelle twiddled his thumbs while his donors flocked to Edwards and was a rat till 2010.

I believe the high mark was 34 GOP Governors after the 1920 elections (48 states). Plummeted to 22 with the disastrous 1922 midterms. 24 in 1924. 26 in 1926 (I’m not making this up, 3 elections in a row with the GOP winning the same number as the year !). 29 were in office in 1929.

1930 dropped to 20. 1932 dropped to 8(!). 1934, 9. 1936, the nadir of the 20th century: 7 out of 48. Regained 10 in 1938 to 17 out of 48.

I would have voted for Bel Edwards.

Blue Dog Democrat is pro-life, pro-gun and pro-Israel.

Its rare indeed when a Democrat is more conservative than his GOP opponent!

Vitter deserved to lose.

I disagree.

I would never vote for a Republican who thought trolling prostitutes was a public service.

What was the GOP thinking when they nominated Vitter?

Against a Blue Dog Democrat, he stood no chance.

Wdwards won but it’s telling what is being reported in the LA newspapers. Edwards had to embrace Republican positions in order to get the votes. Plus as one opined, “Edwards did not win the race as much as Vitter lost it.”

A conservative Democrat working with a GOP statehouse?

Its a designer result possible only in LA.

Edwards ISN’T conservative. He will come out today or Monday with a big list of tax increases - gasoline, sales taxes, income taxes. He has to pay off the teachers union and the AA vote with money that he will try and steal from the taxpayers.

Horsecrap. Edwards is no Conservative, he’s an establishment liberal that got enough of the RINO vote and their $$ to get him elected. He was hemming and hawing on allowing Syrian Jihadists into the state, which should’ve lost him the election by a landslide.

Vitter is one of the most Conservative Senators in DC. LA voters were lied to by Edwards & his leftist backers and for that, the state will soon reap what they sowed in elevating this disgusting, sleazy phony to the Governorship.
