"If we put in place a strong E-Verify system and deport criminal illegal aliens, the number of people here illegally will drop significantly, particularly if there's not a continual flow of people coming in illegally," Cruz said.
"At that point, once we've demonstrated that we can solve the problem, then we can have a conversation about what to do about whatever people remain illegally," Cruz added. When asked if that conversation included the potential for a pathway to legal status, he repeated, "We can have that conversation with the American people once we secure the border."

Come on, this guy has a Goldman partner raising big bucks from big donors. He’s avoiding answering because the answer is yes, he’d legalize the 30 million who are here illegally.
Trump’s plan is a little misleading, too, since he says he’d deport ‘em—and then let the not otherwise criminal back in.
But to me Trump is at least more honest about what he’d do.
Still have to build the wall.
Otherwise, when the heat is off a little, they will just come streaming back in.
The odor of cheese is irresistible to rodents.
True. It is extremely expensive to deport illegals only to give them an expedited re entry as Trump is proposing.
First we secure the border and then we...
Good grief, this is how most Liberal Republicans address the issue.
I don’t know precisely what his plan is, but this sure stinks to high heavens.
Every single one of them says they’ll close the border. Bush said that too. Guess what folks...
Got better plan do ya?
Point to the person that has a better plan than Trump.
Thanks in advance.
CHUCK TODD: You still didn't say what you'd do with the 11 million.
TED CRUZ: Well, my view is first, we secure the borders and solve the problem of illegal immigration. And then I think we can have a conversation about what to do about the people who remain here. I donât think the American people will accept any solution until we demonstrate step number one, we can secure the border.
CHUCK TODD: So anything's on the table? Potentially deportation or not deportation, but anything's on the table for the 11 million--
TED CRUZ: I think we should secure the border and then have a conversation at that point. Stop using the Washington approach of Iâll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. The American people arenât going for it.

And as recently as 2014, Cruz was STILL endorsing the positions he took during the 2013 Gang of Eight fight, wherein he clearly stated that his goal was to bring illegals "out of the shadows" by granting them RPI and LPR legal status!
None of this is bloody new. When Cruz basically calls Rubio a LIAR, he is lying. When Cruz disputes with Rubio that he never supported legalization, he LIES, then goes around and tells Bloomberg, and now Time magazine, that legalization isn't off the table, on the SAME DAY HE RELEASES AN IMMIGRATION PLAN THAT IS SUPPOSED TO PROVE THAT HE DOESN'T SUPPORT LEGALIZATION!
Cruz has been conning us on this issue since day one. He rails against amnesty while redefining it the whole time only as a "pathway to citizenship." For months now, for years now, Cruz has been railing against amnesty, all the while giving different statements to the media saying he'd support legalization!
ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE CRIMINALS, JUST FOR BEING HERE ILLEGALLY!
I like both Cruz's and Trump's written plan.
I don't like Trump saying that he will expedite the good ones back in.
You're quite welcome.
Trust him all you want. For the life of me, I can't understand why you would, but, hey, have at it.
Here's the thing. Congress will never appropriate the money to deport eleventy million illegals. I don't like that fact -- I'd like to see them gone, too. But he just can't do it without any money.
Like it or not, Cruz is right on this.
That was nothing but a snot-ball.
You have nothin’ to point to that’s better.
None the less you jump on these threads to trash Trump’s plan.
Because there is BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in amnesty! And it takes MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to run for office.
No one is exempt from that money except Trump, no one.
“then we can have a conversation about what to do about whatever people remain illegally.” Cruz added. When asked if that conversation included the potential for a pathway to legal status, he repeated. ‘We can have that conversation with the American people once we secure the border’.”
No deal, Ted. Get with Jeff Sessions and NumbersUSA and do your homework. You’re too smart to fall for this stuff, unless you’re trying to triangulate the position to mislead the conservative base.
I guess we can also say that Cruz OPPOSES A BORDER WALL, since that short quip didn’t mention him as supporting one.
That was nothing but a snot-ball. You have nothin' to point to that's better. None the less you jump on these threads to trash Trump's plan.
And I think your response is a ball of snot. my comment stands.
As long as the Club for Growth and that looser McIntosh are in Cruz’s corner, I stay in Trump’s.
The CforG gave him a 100% rating recently. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2014/02/24/club-for-growth-gives-cruz-lee-and-4-other-lawmakers-100-ratings/
I would vote for him, if he were the only choice, but while kicking and screaming that he secure our southwestern border.
As long as “encouraging free trade” means open borders, Cruz is a liberaltarian on the issue and no-go.
First of all, nowhere has Cruz been telling conservatives what his plan is to begin with. Even his immigration plan is BS because he immediately undermines its language when he declares that mass amnesty for all 40 million illegals isn't off the table.
The superiority of Trump's plan is self-evident, even if Trump is going to allow some to return based on merit. At the very least, you know what Trump will do because he's told you. Cruz has misled you for months-- and you've insulted me for months-- by claiming he opposes amnesty and has never supported legalization, even though he did, and still does.
Sadly Ted Cruz does have donors to deal with. I imagine a lot of them are from Wall street. He’s a good man but this go around we somebody that is yuge and self funded. :-)
True. It is extremely expensive to deport illegals only to give them an expedited re entry as Trump is proposing.

Exactly. And then logically and practically— why deport them at all? Just legalize them while they’re here- save the money. Wait for it.
I agree with Cruz. The time to talk about it is once the borders have been shown to be secure to the satisfaction of the vast majority of Americans. Till then nothing should be said other than without secure borders, nothing is on the table.
Secure borders would create a new reality, and the attitude to the illegals even among conservatives could change. To bring that up now is a waste of time.
For those who think that Trump has a more rigid position, what he has said id tat he would force them to go across the border, and that then he would let them back in again. He hasn’t how long they would stay across the border, or how quickly he would let them back in.
I can live with both Cruz’s and Trump’s position. By far the most important thing is to close the border to future invasions.
Exactly. If we consider us a nation of laws, then we should enforce our laws. Illegal is illegal. The answer is simple: deport them.
