This way the Russians can set up a permanent position in the Middle East, to add to their retaking of their former Soviet states. Obama and Putin basically share the same new world vision: weak US, strong Russia. Obama, and many close to him, was a loyal supporter of the Soviet Union. Putin is exploiting the hell out of this useful idiot, despite his basically being on the same team. He’s given Putin damn near everything he wanted in missile defense and nuke deals.
