Sacramento sheriff makes immigration top issue in campaign for Congress

Immigration and public safety emerged Monday as central themes of Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones’ quest for Congress, as the Antelope Republican formally launched his candidacy for the battleground seat now held by Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove.

Jones, joined by family and supporters at a news conference in Rancho Cordova, attacked the White House and Congress for inaction that he blamed for leaving Americans increasingly unsafe.

“For as diligent as I can be in protecting the citizens of Sacramento County, our national leaders are driving us ever closer and faster to disaster,” Jones said Monday. The failed immigration policies, he said, are emblematic of what he labeled similar inaction in the fight against ISIS.

“Make no mistake about it, when America retreats, the world descends into chaos. We saw as an example Friday in Paris,” he said, adding, “This administration has no clue. They have no clue what threat is facing us and they don’t have any strategy to overcome it. That will be a huge issue in this race.”

Sheriff Jones has been great for CCW in Sacramento, making it effectively a "shall issue" county.

But he's another "seal the border first, then let's talk about a pathway to legality" Republican.

I guess he needs GOPe money.

With Republicans like this, who needs Democrats?

I have been to both Antelope and Elk Grove on numerous occasions. The only sheriff I can remember, is Glenn Craig.

“seal the border and then talk about what to do” is better than leave the border wide open and undefended.

If he is running against a demonrat it is a step in the right direction

I think it was Robbie Waters who ran into those sand abutments on the Freeway when he was drunk and the CHP took him home to shower and clean-up before they tested him. Fond memories of Sacto.

Lived in Elk Grove. At stage coach, asked sheriff’s deputies to give me a head start leaving. They said they don’t do tickets. They were real cops and then pointed to the CHP guys eating and said, those are the traffic cops. Fun stuff.

He’s as good as any alternative we have in this area.

And he has great name recognition.

And yes, he kept his ccw promises.

I lived in the Fairfield, Vacaville area. Some of my co workers lived in Antelope and Elk Grove.
