The far-right wing in both America and Europe have seized on the Paris terror attacks as an excuse to turn away the thousands of desperate refugees who are fleeing the terror and violence of ISIS. Thirteen American governors (all Republican) have announced they will refuse to accept Syrian refugees in their states, demonstrating a remarkable ignorance of Constitutional law. As ThinkProgress noted, "the Supreme Court explained in Hines v. Davidowitz, "the supremacy of the national power in the general field of foreign affairs, including power over immigration, naturalization and deportation, is made clear by the Constitution." States do not get to overrule the federal government on matters such as this one."
Those declarations by GOP governors are riding the wave of Islamophobia coursing through the right-wing. Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz both proposed profiling refugees by religion and "only accepting Christians," because despite the fact that Christian terrorist attacks take place in our country on a regular basis, Cruz thinks "there is no meaningful risk of Christians committing acts of terror." Trump said that he would "strongly consider" shutting down mosques in America, completely contradicting his widely professed devotion for "religious freedom." Mike Huckabee called for the new Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, to halt the "importation" of refugees or resign.
President Obama ripped these xenophobic bigots in his Monday press conference, chastising them for abandoning American values and buying into their own fearmongering:
"When I hear folks say that, well, maybe we should just admit the Christians, but not the Muslims, when I hear political leaders suggesting that there would be a religious test for which person whoâs fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted, when some of those folks themselves come from families who benefited from protection when they were fleeing political persecution, thatâs shameful. Thatâs not American. Thatâs not who we are. we donât have religious tests to our compassion."
He is absolutely right. While there are certainly dangers we need to address, this kind of reaction from the right-wing is exactly what ISIS wanted. By reacting with fear and discrimination, we marginalize more Muslims and push them into the arms of extremists. The passport that indicated one of the attackers was a Syrian refugee is likely fake, and an obvious plant to inflame fear of refugees. These people are desperately fleeing their homes because the murderous horrors of the Paris attacks are a daily occurrence in ISIS territory â a mass grave of eighty murdered women was recently discovered in Iraq's Sinjar province by liberating Kurdish peshmerga units. It is our moral obligation to accept and protect the incoming refugees in the face of unthinkable violence.
It's also illegal defy Federal law by creating "sanctuary cities."
So what's your point, (colin taylor)retard?
Last I read it was 70,000 “refugees.”
Not in my backyard.
However, Clinton bagman Governor McAwful is doing his best to aid Obama’s agenda.
He’d take 2 million in a heartbeat.
Feds can't impeach a governor.
Only his legislature or his electorate can.
I guess we're about to find out. Does anyone have a map of the states which have already announced non-compliance?
Why do I ask?
The White House is currently occupied by a RICO unconstitutional criminal cabal. And the conspiracy as we discuss this is certainly choosing the most vulnerable, the most likely State to fold under pressure. Or joining the treachery by accepting Federal bribes.
It would behoove the brave states resisting the Manchurian Candidate and his flying monkeys to also plan for National Guard mutual aid among adjacent states. Arizona is the only isolated State. Most others have more than a group of three.
Barack Hussein is entirely capable of overreaching again. Let's see where this goes. Are California volunteers accepted?
Yawn.
maybe,
But congress can stop funding this crap.
“States should just reject the notion that the federal government is a controlling legal authority. It really isnât.”
Amendment X to the US Constitution: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
With respect to “Marbury v. Madison” the early 1800’s Supreme Court case where it usurped the power to define the Constitution and law here is a quote from Thomas Jefferson: “But, you may ask, if the two departments [i.e., federal and state] should claim each the same subject of power, where is the common umpire to decide ultimately between them? In cases of little importance or urgency, the prudence of both parties will keep them aloof from the questionable ground; but if it can neither be avoided nor compromised, a convention of the States must be called to ascribe the doubtful power to that department which they may think best.”
âThomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824. ME 16:47
Those Mayors flout the law and suffer no consequences from the Feds - it's time for Governors to take control of their States even if it means putting an armed National Guard front out to back up their (so far) empty words.
We need to put a real adult in the WH or we have pretty much lost it all.
Now for a short public service announcement to all on FR:
I prefer Cruz and my money goes to his campaign, hence the Cruz link. If you like someone else, donate to him/her (find your own link to do it) and if you use FR and don't donate, then please don't complain about the welfare leeches or those who have Obama Phones because, functionally, you are no different than any other FReeloader
PS - If you are one of those who cannot afford even a small donation to FR or a candidate, God Bless and happy FReeping!.....
GO CRUZ!! Keep it up Trump!!
perhaps the 10th amendment maybe?
I love how they use this argument to cement their ridiculous hit piece: “These people are desperately fleeing their homes because the murderous horrors of the Paris attacks are a daily occurrence in ISIS territory ââ¬â a mass grave of eighty murdered women was recently discovered in Iraq’s Sinjar province by liberating Kurdish peshmerga units. It is our moral obligation to accept and protect the incoming refugees in the face of unthinkable violence.”
The grave that was found in this instance was filled with Christians, not the Syrian refugees Obama and his ilk are interested in importing here. They are openly advocating denying entry to the Christians and have been for quite some time denying their requests for aid in lieu of providing shelter to muslim Syrians mostly of the male 18-35 age group variety.
Agree tell Obama when he closes the borders & resend all his illegal executive orders then come tell Governor they can’t refuse refugees.
U got that right I hope Governor stand up for US Citizens unlike Obama or US Congressâ¦â¦.
If this argument was legitimate, we would open up Ellis Island.
...the supremacy of the national power in the general field of foreign affairs, including power over immigration, naturalization and deportation, is made clear by the Constitution.”.
Can anyone describe to me how ‘refugees’ fit into any of the above categories? One of these things is NOT like the other.
I have YET to hear how/why it’s our/Europe’s problem when the whole of N. Africa, the whole of the M. East (aside from Israel), and some of Asia is muslim...Why not travel a few hundred miles instead of several thousand??
What Christian terrorist attacks?
OK, Obama, now what?
Better than the Catholic charity that a recently arrived refugee already disappeared from?
The same that just passed a two-year ‘budget’ deal?
Seem to recall they said something about non-funding of PP, exec. amnesty, O’Care, etc.
And FURTHER recall about non-binding future Congresses.
IOW, we’re still a Banana Republic.
I was being sarcastic.
If harsh words “push moderate muslims into the arms of extremists”, they were never moderate to begin with.
