The words men and women are soon to come off many Philadelphia restrooms, thanks to a bill passed Thursday.
City Council unanimously approved the ordinance requiring that single-occupancy public restrooms be labeled as gender-neutral, and that men or women be dropped from signs.
The bill, introduced by Councilman Mark Squilla, applies to single-occupant bathrooms open to the public and not to multiple-stall restrooms. Mayor Nutter, whose Office of LGBT Affairs drafted the bill, is expected to sign it.
"For business owners, the only impact is taking down one sign and putting up another," said Nellie Fitzpatrick, the office's director. "But for individuals trying to access these spaces, it's eliminating barriers that are unnecessary and should not exist.
"Gender-specific bathrooms have been catalysts for harassment or violence against transgender people and have discouraged some from going out in public, Fitzpatrick said. She called the bill "one of about a million small steps" needed to combat the discrimination and violence transgender people face.

“One holer”. Problem solved. But, I tell ya’, if I had a daughter in a ‘community bathroom’, and a ‘dude-ette’ walked in....his eyes and throat are MINE.
Unfortunately, with a “One holer”, in a large venue,....it creates a huge line (longer than usual for the loo). So there’s that. And, when my bladder is full,.....watch out!
Why change anything if it is single stall and has a lock on the door? What a nothing burger.
With steep penalties for leaving the seat up.
Don’t need a 3rd bathroom. In the good old days if we caught a perv in the girls can we would beast the dogshyt outta them.
I’m all for a revival.
Common sense bathroom laws.
Libs are not for those.
And what if two males are in there taking too much time?
So the tampon vending machine will have to carry condoms now?
I was out to breakfast up in Canada Sunday morning and when I went to the loo I discovered I had many choices. Men, women, and men/women/handicapped. All were single stall.
Problem solved, everyone has a place to go.
I like this idea. It’s stupid to have a line of women with children waiting to use the single stall ladies bathroom, if the men’s bathroom is vacant, and vice versa. Women usually have longer bathroom lines than men. Most people think this is because the clothes are more complicated, but it is really because it is usually the mothers who take children to the bathroom. So you have men waltzing in by themselves, while the mothers take their two or three children who have to go, which takes much longer.
“For business owners, the only impact is taking down one sign and putting up another,”
No, the impact will come when people are faced with a choice of sending their 6 year old daughter into a bathroom with men OR shopping elsewhere.
Of course, why anybody lives or shops in Filth-a-delphia is beyond me.
It’s for single stall restrooms.
One person at a time.
.
It sure seems to like this gender neutral nonsense is a deliberate distraction.
I hate unisex facilities!
As long as the door has a lock, whatâs the problem?

Many women do not like to use a restroom that has been used by men.
Yes, very common in hospitals. It’s also the bathroom set-up 50 years ago in my classroom when I was in the first grade. It also makes it easier when a parent has to take a small child of the opposite sex to use the bathroom.
Do guys have cooties? Actually, women’s rest rooms are usually a lot nastier than men’s.
Not true. I work in a gas station and I’ve had to clean up minor messes on the seat in the ladies’ room a few times, and only one poo-nado. The men’s...at least 3x a week I have to clean shit stains off the seat, and I don’t mean a little smear at the back, I mean globs and bootprints. And glove up to fish out handfuls of diarrhea-laden TP rather than overflow it trying to flush. And more than one turd in the urinal....
Do y’all really want me to continue? I’d much rather wipe a few drops of pee off the seat, lol.
Inconsiderate men don’t put the seat down. Works both ways you know. I had a all male household with me the only female, boys were the worst about putting the seat down.
Mayor Nutter,....[ Mayor NUTTER what could be more fitting.] whose Office of LGBT Affairs drafted the bill, is expected to sign it.
the Office.....of LGBT.... Affairs?
how vibrant and rich with opportunities for cruel parody!!
these people belong in STRAIGHTJACKETS
I’m sure door locks will be ruled as exclusionary. Someone needs to invent a portable personal lock.
