A 9-year-old girl died Sunday after a pit bull attacked her while she played with friends in a Long Island backyard, authorities said.
Nassau County police officers responded to a 911 call at a Holland Avenue house in Elmont at around 10:30 a.m. and found the dog attacking the girl. When one of the officers entered the yard from the house, the dog charged at the officer, who shot and killed the animal, said Detective Michael Bitsko. "It was a violent attack," he said. "They had to put the dog down."
The girl's identity hasn't been disclosed by police. There had been no previous complaints to police about the dog, Bitsko said, adding that he didn't know why the dog attacked the girl.
The dog's owner, Carlyle Arnold, 29, lives in a second-floor apartment of the house. He was arrested on an unrelated charge of violating an order of protection and was being questioned about the attack.
Sorry but I’m not a fan of labs. Their aggression is displayed by their being overly affectionate... to the point of wanting to sit in my lap and always be the center of attention. They are puppies most of their lives. I’m sure that one who is well trained and I mean really well trained would be okay. Our cattle dog wanted to play frisbee with everyone but when we told him to leave the room he did. I’ve never seen that trait in a lab. OK, flame away lab lovers.
Only thing more dangerous than a pack of rabid, feral Chihuahuas, is a nest of Weiner dogs. Ask any mail carrier...

I guess you don’t know the difference between breeds, but in a backward way you bring up a point. Every breed has specific characteristics. I wouldn’t own a dog I couldn’t trust with everyone including other kids. Much like I wouldn’t own a weapon and leave it available to anyone to play with.
A dangerous dog (pitbull) is a deadly weapon. Labrador Retreviers, not so much. Guess which one I own.
Labs certainly are good at killing chickens, but then they are great bird dogs too.
We had one that broke into the chicken house every time we went fishing and didn’t take him. Our bad, it happened a few times.
I have a canister of Halt attached to both my bikes, a canister of pepper spray (the people kind) pinned to my pants, and a .38 Special strapped to the handlebars. I just hope that if a big dog ever gets me off the bike that I am able to get to at least one of them!
My chocolate lab will bark if someone tries to break in, but then she'll just lick them to death. She also loves cats and wants to be friends with them.

I doubt a kid has ever been killed by an overly affectionate dog.
I’ve found (by experience) FOX 5.3 police formula pepper spray to be effective.
Well first show me a moderate moose-limb.

That's unfair. You know I can't name a moderate muslim.
All dogs bite, which is a reason for keeping children away from those which are dangerous, are able to inflict serious wounds. Pit bulls, I think, are too strong and too unpredictable to be kept as a family dog.
