Southern Coalition for Social Justice senior staff attorney Daryl Atkinson appeared Saturday as a guest on MSNBCâs âMelissa Harris-Perryâ to talk President Obamaâs executive order to âban the box,â which refers to the section on a job application for criminal history.
According to Atkinson, people with a criminal background âface legal discrimination in many areas of lifeâ
âThe presidentâs action on Monday really affirms values that we hold dear in this country. Values like inclusion and equal opportunity for all people because people with records face legal discrimination in many areas of life. The 65 million Americans, one in three adult Americans, that have criminal record history, face barriers in employment, housing, education; even volunteering in their childrenâs school.â
âBecause African-Americans and Latinos are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, it results in the social and economic exclusion similar to the Jim Crow South,â he added

Actions have consequences.
I can think of a whole lot of crimes women would love to know about when meeting that new hunk.
Thanks to Obama, that may be near impossible soon.
One more perk the Democrats have unloaded on Women.
They should all be given jobs making little rocks out of big rocks with a sledge hammer.
For once, I agree with MSNBC.
Overturn all those discriminatory gun laws.
I think Obama is against every tenant of our traditional culture - everything that has made us a relatively successful culture.
Next we won't have to stop at red lights. Obama would probably be happy at the ensuing chaos.
You break the law and you lose some of those privilages of being considered a “model citizen”.
Liberals are experts at giving the word “discrimination” a bad name.
The left really doesn’t think that minorities should ever be imprisoned, prosecuted or arrested. Laws are a figment of a racist power structure and are unfair.
As long as the underclass is rising up to overthrow their oppressors, they can do no wrong.
discrimination is good. discrimination is needed to tell good from bad. Being arrested is bad. One has to get to the elementary school level with these people.
” disproportionately represented “ thats macro microagression!!!
Makes more sense than discriminating against Christians.
Geee.... maybe we should be teaching the little thugs in school that a criminal record WILL get you discriminated against and there is nothing you can do about it except DON’T GET IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW!!!!!
Seems like it would be a great tool in preventing crime.
This is discrimination based on your skin. This is based off you character.
Jeez, imagine a retail business not wanting to hire somebody after they did 10 years for armed robbery. Gosh, what is the world coming to? That’s as horrible as a pharmacy not wanting to hire a guy who did time for drug trafficking.
For the people decrying this, ask them if they’d have that person in their house watching their kids, and watch how fast they shut up.
There is nothing to keep these do-gooders from starting a business and hiring whoever they want to but I imagine their feelings would change in that case.
I haven’t committed any crime and I can’t get any job. I certainly don’t want to be competing with people who’ve robbed, raped, and stabbed their fellow humans.
hell, a LOT of HR simply look for gaps in employment history and throw out all those that have them.
This must be why no one will hire me. I took 20 years off to raise kids.
The real irony is that the biggest complainers are limousine liberals that would be offended to walk on the same side of the street as these criminals. But they want you to bring them into your house and business and treat them like their crimes never happened.
Amazing ....
Yes, and for a very good reason.
