Ben Carson faced some combative reporters during a press conference in Florida tonight about the various issues in his background that have been raised this week.
He dismissed Politico's report about him not being formally offered a West Point scholarship, simply insisting it was relayed to him that he could get one with the kind of accomplishments in his background.
He declared, "There is a desperation on behalf of some to try to find a way to tarnish me... Next week it'll be my kindergarten teacher who said I peed in my pants."
-snip-
"I do not remember this level of scrutiny for one President Barack Obama."

Your ignorance is astounding. Now you're calling a veteran a liar. You should STFU while you can.
“He never said he received a scholarship. What he said was that he had a full scholarship opportunity that he turned down.”
“In Carson’s 1990 autobiography, ‘Gifted Hands,’ he wrote: “Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point.” He added that despite turning the offer down, “As overjoyed as I felt to be offered such a scholarship, I wasn’t really tempted.””
Note he said he had a full scholarship offer to West Point that he TURNED DOWN. So it was more than just an offer, wasn’t it, if Carson said he turned it down. And he used the word “offer”, not opportunity. You bloviate. Geez.
“Your ignorance is astounding. Now you’re calling a veteran a liar. You should STFU while you can.”
Go read the requirements on the West Point website, and then you STFU.
You are correct. Because indeed, the 2nd meaning of the word scholarship is— “support for education”.
To wit: USMA and all the other national academies, provides- tuition, room, board, medical/dental care, and annual salary for cadets. This IS indeed a scholarship for those admitted to develop into the serving officer leadership ranks as desired by senior commanders.
The utter foolishness of some posting here indicates their lack of understanding, almost willful.
I can’t believe the nonsense being spouted. One would have to be living in Fantasyland to think that a 4 star couldn’t pull strings to make it happen. Carson went on to become a successful brain surgeon, and people question whether he may have had an informal offer for West Point? Ridiculous.
It’s going to be a long year, eh?
Will do:)
If a FReeper posts something stupid, ignorant, ill-informed or otherwise, a multitude of FReepers will descend like locusts and at first be gentle and attempt to reason. Then, should that approach fail, the interactions will become increasingly harsh. Finally, if the low-info FReeper persists, Hellfire shall rain down and the message delivered with shock and awe.....or the hapless FReeper will be crushed like an ant under Ulysses's mighty boot.
That actually came from a representative of West Point in a question and answer thing.
I have already sent to you a link to the form the ROTC uses...The Q&A quote was from Highschool students..JRTC.
So I have quit proving stuff to you as it does no good...
What I have sent thusfar is:
The application form for a ROTC nomination...
The results of a Q&A about JRTC (junior) in highschool and the rules for nomination from that.
Also the fact that current military and certain veterans are eligible for a vice presidential nomination.
Add to that the more common routes through your congressman, or senator and you have all the ways in to west point.
I like Carson and I would have no trouble voting for him, but my biggest fear with him is that he's too nice. We need an @$$hole. We need someone who is MEAN.
If Carson could allay my fear that he's too nice, I would be much reassured.
Of that there is no doubt in my mind.
When I watched the press conference, I was struck how shrill and breathless the media was. They seemed literally were panicked, as if to suddenly realize thier attack had fallen flat. By the end they were just trying to salvage thier reputations.
He said he was offered...
That’s it...
That offer from the ROTC comes in the form of a nomination through the ROTC. But It never happened because he thanked them and turned it down.
As to scholarship business...full scholarship or whatever, it is a scholarship and a full one as most all expenses are paid. Except haircuts, if I recall....
What kind of person are you? You appear to me to be totally blinded by your own obstinacy.
Thank you. I see no date on this Ad. I will be calling West Point Director of Admissions tomorrow to ask about such ads and whether one had to have a nomination by a Congressman, 2 Senators or the VP at that time, just like it is today. I’ll let you know the results of my call after I find out what West Point says, and when such an ad as you have posted here actually was advertised and where. Will get back to you. Thanks again for the info.
In post #155 I posted a link to one of the archived ads for full government sholarships to WEST POINT that ran during the years appropriate for this discussion.
Scroll down a little bit to see it.
It’s just anecdotal. But standard procedure today does not mean it was 20, 30 40 years ago. For example, today the Pentagon wrestles with weighty matters of transgender service members...
Great.....at least we achieved something...
Good information. The meeting with the General and any offer would not have happened at the end of his senior year. The West Point admissions process happens during the first semester of the junior year! The paragraph from his autobiography, which someone posted over and over earlier today, does not follow a logical timeline.
Guys that hook cables and things up for the crane operator.
“He said he was offered...”
And who offered it to him. West Point never did. Who offered him the scholarship, pray tell?
Really. You read the website. Remarkable.
So what did it say about accessions from active duty?
You’re welcome! It may require them to do archival searches, not sure if they will have this sort of trivia easily accessible.
I expect a good deal of this is due to changes in culture, in the Army itself and former goals met, new ones established, etc.
