Ben Carson Facebook Post August 13th 2015 (says he was thrilled to get offer from West Point)

The next question is from Bill. He wanted to know if it was true that I was offered a slot at West Point after high school.

Bill, that is true. I was the highest student ROTC member in Detroit and was thrilled to get an offer from West Point. But I knew medicine is what I wanted to do. So I applied to only one school. (it was all the money I had). I applied to Yale and thank God they accepted me. I often wonder what might have happened had they said no.

Thank you. So at the very minimum, he “embellished” the story. The last twenty-four hours has been enlightening.

Yes it has been. How quickly the worm turns.

why can’t one confuse being offered an appointment from the mouth of a General at a dinner with an official offer in writing by West Point?.

If he had said yes he would have been admitted.. I call that an offer

There are two issues here. First, everyone who runs for president should expect and should have a complete vetting (not like Obama). Second, yes there are attacks, especially on Conservative minorities and/or women. In either case, in my opinion, Dr. Ben is in way over his head.

I don’t hate Carson. I don’t agree with him on policy and am certainly not the only one on FR that thinks he got caught by his own words.

Does a congressional appointment override that?
I’ve not known of anyone admitted to a military academy other than through congressional appointment (not that many), or maybe the appointment has to be made formally by a congressman or even the President?

A book called “Letters From The Presidents,” Franklin Roosevelt wrote to the future president in 1950-something if he would consider appointing a certain young man to West Point. I don’t recall the details of the case - but I am thinking it was a soldier killed in World War II who left behind a young son.

I’ll agree it would be unwise for a young man or young woman to accept appointment to any of the military academies if he or she didn’t pass the interviews.

I was just talking about this a month or so ago with my brother who went to Annapolis. It sounded quite elaborate. Several days worth of filling out forms and interviews before the appointment could go through. For a while he was on the committee here in our part of the world to interview candidates. Sounds complicated.

Carson supports TPP and amnesty. I can never support that.

Was Ben Carson a teenager when he recounted this tale in his autobiography?
Was Been Carson a teenager when he recounted this tale in a recent Facebook post?

I’ve seen some flimsy excuses in this thread, but “he was just a teen” takes the blue ribbon.

No, but he is remembering things from when he WAS a teenager. I sometimes have had the chance to check (via YouTube or Google) my own memories from 35 years ago (I am a bit younger than Carson) and found that things were not to the letter exactly as I remembered them.

I am not a Carson supporter, but I just watched the hyenas attack him at the news event (linked on Drudge), and Carson described everything admirably, and was remarkably patient with disingenuous questions.

We have to stop eating our own.

Agreed. I just finished watching Carson's interview with the press where he explained the situation. I think he gave a perfectly reasonable explanation.

I was wrong when I wrote his campaign agreed the story was a fabrication. There were news sites at the time that reported that, but it was apparently untrue. Carson's campaign has NOT said the candidate lied or even mischaracterized the events.

Dr. Ben Carson ... QUIT PLAYING EGO GAMES ... and ACT like you're "Presidential Material".

Under "normal" circumstances with "decent" people and a "moral news media" Congress and the Senate would be filled with 535 "Dr. Ben Carson" types.

That would be a good thing.

But that's not reality.

Dr. Ben Carson (once he accomplished his first surgeries) has been "coddled" ... for both his accomplishments and because he's black ... sorry, that's the TRUTH ...

so Dr. Ben Carson has been wandering around saying whatever he wants, whatever comes into his mind, "whatever" ...

and that is NOT how a 2016 U.S. Presidential Campaign is successfully operated.

Period.

This whole "Mannatech, Westpoint and Pyramids" sequence should be a DAMNED wake-up call for what I suspect is an arrogant (I'm the smartest guy in the room) Dr. Ben Carson.

Being U.S. President is NOT about a person's ego ...

Rather, it's like being a U.S. Marine Sniper at Falujia ... where EVERY shot MUST be a "kill" ...

or your buddies DIE.

Dr. Ben Carson ... QUIT PLAYING EGO GAMES ... and ACT like you're "Presidential Material".

I did not mean to imply that when I said they will go back to first grade, etc. Even if it is yesterday, I was saying they will sooner or later do anything to destroy everybody except Hillary Clinton. Reread what I wrote and you will see that you misunderstood the “first grade” part which was just the first thing in a list of “types of things” or extremes they will go to in order to tear some candidates down while letting others skate based on THEIR favorites. I can accept any standard whatsoever, including all those I listed, so long as it is applied to ALL candidates. Dr. Carson’s resume, Donald Trump’s resume, Senator Cruz’s resume all put those of all the Democrat candidates to shame.
