New Berlin —In the wake of the Oct. 22 attack on a Bichon poodle in which a coyote carried the dog off but later dropped it, New Berlin police say they have information about what to do in coyote encounters.
In the Oct. 22 incident, the dog was near a patio when it was snatched up and the dog owner was actually on the patio. He and his teenage son gave chase making noise and finally the coyote dropped the dog who needed stitches to close its wounds.
The attack was the only one that police Capt. Michael Glider said he was aware of here. However, many city residents have seen coyotes in their yards and elsewhere, he said.
Police have information from the Humane Society of the United States on how to scare off a coyote. The advice involves making as much noise and commotion as possible.
Never run away
The society also emphasizes that people should never run away from a coyote.
Yell and wave your arms, use noisemakers such as whistles, air horns, bells, soda cans filled with pennies or dead batteries, or bang pots and pans together, the society advises in its "Coyote Hazing Guidelines." All these methods are called hazing.
It also says a more aggressive approach might be needed such as throwing sticks, small rocks, cans, tennis balls and rubber balls at them.
"Try squirting them with hoses, water guns with vinegar water, spray bottles with vinegar water, pepper spray, bear repellant or walking sticks," the guidelines say.
If a coyote has not been hazed before, he might not run away immediately.
Step up the effort
"If this happens, you might need to walk towards the coyote and increase the intensity of your hazing," it says. "If the coyote does run away, he might stop after a distance and look back at you. It's important to continue to haze the coyote until he leaves the area completely."
The guidelines say these methods also should be used if a dog walker spots a coyote. However, the guidelines advise picking up the dog, if possible, or placing him behind you. Then blow a whistle or air horn at it, squirt him with a squirt gun, yell and wave your arms, use a homemade noisemaker and throw things at it.
These methods can be used even for a group of coyotes because there is usually one dominant animal who will respond and the others will follow.
People might need to use several methods before the animals are scared off. The coyotes might come back after a single hazing but seldom come back after two, the guidelines say. Also, the coyotes must see the person doing the hazing. Trying to scare them from a car, a house or from behind a bush is ineffective.
Bow hunting allowed
Bow hunters in rural areas of New Berlin might consider shooting coyotes, as there is open season on them. However, they would have to meet city hunting requirements, Glider said. In general that includes being 100 yards away from buildings and shooting toward the ground, he said, but homeowners should check with police.
Coyotes can't be hunted with a gun because city ordinances do not allow firing a gun, except in self-defense or to defend a family member. However, Glider said that exception probably would hold for fending off an attack on a pet, although he advised against using a gun.
"You would have to be pretty good at what you're doing or you would end up shooting your pet," he said.
Coyotes have killed three small dogs this fall in a close by suburb to New Berlin.

BTW, what some may be seeing could be coydogs. I was hiking in the Cuyahoga Valley Tow-Path Park a few years back and saw a very large coyote looking canine, problem was this creature had a body and coloration not consistent with a coyote or a domesticated dog. I can tell you the animal in question was plenty big enough to pose a real threat if he`d had a mind to.
This morning, just past midnight, I heard a standoff between what sounded like two coyotes and two dogs in the ravine behind my house. It went on for a good 15 minutes, with the coyotes and the dogs alternating barking and yipping at each other in obviously aggressive fashion. It sounded like they were fairly close to one another, and it sounded deadly serious. As much as I wished to help the dogs, it was pitch black and I couldn’t see a thing. I kept listening, afraid I’d hear an injured yelp from either of the dogs. After about 15 minutes, everything went completely silent.
We hear them at times down in the river bottom below our
house. It’s eerie; like a whole herd of women screaming.
They have little baby coyotes with them sometimes. - They
generally are on their way down the river. The howling
keeps on getting far away as they move along.

On my property, they are shoot-on-sight. Feral hogs too.
It is well know among the people that lease and have permission to be on my property that I will pay $50 for every coyote head they bring me.
Turning and running is the WORST thing you can do with a predator, be it wolf, coyote, bear or tiger. The only human ever killed by coyotes that I am aware of did exactly that. You can just pretend to ignore them while walking in any direction but keep facing them, but no eye contact- they see that as confidence and you being boss. I prefer to either advance aggressively on them while maintaining eye contact (they will see as challenge, but by another predator, and bolt when they think you are serious).
(if its a whole pack) just kneel down on both knees and stay low. There is no opening for them to attack, so they will circle, just keep facing them and don't let any get behind you. If they charge, flip them over your head (its just a feint so the others can get your back). Yes, I've actually done this with packs of wild dogs on several occassions; after a couple of passes they give up and move on.
First, the Humane Society of the United States is an animal rights wacko group. They couldn’t’ care less if you or your dog is attacked.
Second, if coyotes don’t run when you’re clearly confronting them, they might be rabid. The best solution is a bullet then burning the body.

I think we have a few PETA freaks on the fence near the coyotes.
Arguably the best varmint round. Makes crows and ground hogs blow up pretty well too.
Shot pellets in a .22 work fine. I used them to deter raccoons. The police showed up one time because my neighbor called them complaining. I showed them the cartridge I used, told them the coons were fishing in my pond. They looked at the shells and commented that the shot was harmless over 25 feet and the neighbor lived 50 feet away. My neighbor was a bit miffed.

It’s probably more accurate to say that New Berlin is a suburb of Wauwatosa! LOL. ‘Tosa is very urban.
Or just pull out your gun and blast the blanking thing to the next world. :-)
