Ben Carson has surged into the lead of the Republican presidential race, getting support from 29 percent of GOP primary voters, according to a brand-new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

That's the highest percentage any GOP candidate has obtained so far in the survey.

Carson's 29 percent is followed by Donald Trump at 23 percent, Marco Rubio at 11 percent, Ted Cruz at 10 percent and Jeb Bush at 8 percent. These findings are similar to a New York Times/CBS poll released last week, which also showed Carson in first place in the national GOP contest.

This looks like a poll Karl Rove would put out.

I’ll bite and claim to be a Carson supporter. Why? Because he demonstrates, in the interviews and debates I’ve seen, that *he can think*. I love Cruz for the same reason. Trump? All I hear is bluster and insult, not only from him, but also his supporters. I am not the bandwagon type who is persuaded by such tactics. I appreciate issues that Trump has raised, and give him his due for not letting political correctness stifle him. But he comes across, to me, as a bully.

Not much luck with black celebrities either. Bill Cosby, Tiger Woods, O.J. Simpson, Herman Cain...they all seem to end up in crime or scandal. Eddie Murphy fared better, except he forgot how to be funny, which was something of a crime. Then you have the gangsta rappers, who start out as criminals and then become famous.

Me neither. Most everyone I know and my family are for Trump and some for Cruz. Not a peep about Carson. So his supporters are only talking to the pollsters. :-)

I don’t think Trump or Cruz are in it to sell their books. Trump’s books sell anyway and Cruz needed to introduce himself to the electorate nationally.

Carson has already published books but running will definitely increase his sales.

I don’t know if that is the reason Carson is running but I have wondered about it.

The other reason is that he, Carson, doesn’t seem to be doing a lot toward a campaign structure.

He is spending round 80% of his donations on raising more money rather than spending that money to get on ballets and hire campaign infrastructure.

No. I have met a number of them, and have seen bumper stickers for him on more cars than any other candidate. Considering the fact that 40% of the country is going to vote for a Democrat, it is rude and unhelpful for you or anyone here to characterize Carson supporters in that manner. The post was void of substance, and wasn't even funny.

You kidding? If the Carson surge is real, we're screwed. Those knuckle draggers are voting religion instead of policy and common sense.

The key is Carson CAN’T win the nomination. The “Iowa” evangelical track doesn’t work to win the whole primary. Didn’t work for Huck and Santorum and won’t for Carson. What Carson can achieve is splitting the evangelical vote off into their “dream” candidate so that Trump and Cruz’ numbers stay depressed low enough to let the establishment hack Rubio beat the pack.

Carson’s rise means ONE thing and ONE thing alone, the establishment candidate will win. When this much vote is siphoned off to the “pipe dream” evangelical candidate, that is the only possible result.

Asking religious types to support Trump will never work. Asking Trump supporters to back Carson will never work either. Cruz is the only potential consensus candidate who can satisfy both camps. Cruz has huge credibility on fighting for religious issues through his Supreme Court cases and recent support for Kim Davis and other issues. He also has strong policy experience on economic and national security matters. He is not a lightweight on those issues like Carson.

Ted Cruz is absolutely THE ONLY candidate who can potentially unite conservatives in a large enough number to overtake the establishment RINO. There is NO convincing Carson voters to go to Trump or vice versa. But there IS the potential to convince both Carson and Trump voters to go to Cruz.

You help illustrate why I believe the only effort that can defeat the RINO in this election is an agreement by all wings of the conservative movement to coalesce around Cruz. It is too far a bridge to bring a Carson supporter to Trump or vice versa. But either a Carson or a Trump supporter is likely to be reasonably happy with Cruz. And unless we find a candidate who can unite most of the different wings of the party, evangelical/religious, libertarian, national security, and fiscal conservatives, the establishment will be able to divide and conquer us easily as they have done for decades.

You are forgetting the cross over votes for Trump.

He absolutely has the best chance of winning the general.

I know exactly what polling means. I am using typical media approach which is whatever poll shows anyone ahead of Trump sill be the one heralded.

But mo seriously, yes, you can cross reference polls IF you can figure out which ones are "leading" and which are "lagging." I don't know which is which---but the likelihood, given all the polls, is that the Carson boomlet is over.

Did you know many Huckabee supporters? It’s the same group - mostly evangelicals plus a lot of people who want an outsider who is not Trump. It’s why Huckabee can’t get any traction this time around - his voters have all gone to Carson.

There are a lot of right of center voters who don’t want an establishment candidate, but also don’t like “the Donald”. Carson seems to be getting a lot of those people right now.

Gingrich had the best chance of winning the general last time. But with Santorum siphoning off the whole evangelical wing, they paved the way for Romney.

I personally believe Cruz has the best chance of winning the general. Trump’s gaffes and 30 years worth of a controversial public record will be able to be weaved into a lot of negative ads. There’s already a movie, You’ve Got Trumped, highlighting the same kind of unpopular business record that Romney got hit with in King of Bain.

You are also not taking into account the winner take all states.

Trump could win them with the numbers he has now.

The GOPe set it up that way counting on the vote being split but thought Jeb could come out on top.

They didn’t take Trump into consideration or their plan might have worked.

I would be thrilled with Cruz. I don’t think enough of the rest of the country would be happy to make him President though.

Trump might be the only one who can beat Hillary. And to even speak of Hillary being electable at all (with her radical moral views) shows how low this country has sunk. But the same could have been said for Obama being voted in also.

You make a good point about Cruz’ ability to appeal across conservative voter demographics.

BS just to try and rattle Trump.

I'm sure Trump knows the deal here and who he is dealing with, and I have no doubt he laughs at them and their BS poll.
