Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) is surging in a key early-voting state in the first major survey taken since last week's Republican debate.
A new Monmouth University poll released on Monday showed real-estate tycoon Donald Trump still dominating in the Republican primary, with 26% support among likely GOP primary voters. He was followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who garnered 16% support in the same poll.
But Rubio has more-than tripled his support in the last month-plus. He has jumped from 4% support in September to 13% now, putting him just behind Carson.
Rubio led the other establishment-type candidates â including Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), who came in fourth in the poll with 11%, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), who registered a distant sixth at just 7%.
The poll came on the heels of Rubio's widely praised performance during the third Republican debate.

The GOPe and big donors have thrown in the towel on Yeb and are now lining up behind Rubio.
All a Trump or Cruz would need to do is point this out. And maybe remind voters of Rubio’s membership in the gang of eight.
Senior Amnesty has not had his anal exam yet. His surge is at Carson’s expense not Trump. I guess you shouldn’t listen to a gut talking to you about a guy in 3rd place with 13% in one poll in one state winning.
I think you’re right. I don’t think Bush has much time left. He has the money to hang on through the early primaries, but when he loses all three (IA, NH, and SC) - nay, when he gets his clock cleaned in all three, that will be the end.
Listen up.
Here comes more manure from the establishment.
Amnesty Rubio is surging. What a joke.
You know this is just Rubio sucking up JEB!’s support. Neither one of them is particularly popular here in Florida. We already know Marco’s a weasel, but low info voters might be fooled when Marco starts speaking lies. All Trump would have to do is keep talking about illegals and jobs for citizens/legals as he has been. When Rubio starts talking about how mean spirited that is, Trump can remind him how mean spirited it is to sneak into this country and steal things from its citizens. Marco doesn’t know anything about that.
Only Trump can beat Hillary.
And then there is Trump’s tweet:
Marco Rubio will not win. Weak on illegal immigration, strong on amnesty and has the appearance to killers of the world as a “lightweight”.
That will last until Trump starts pointing out that Marco tried to do amnesty.
How Rubio can poll above Cruz is a mystery to me.
Rubio is exploding a lot of things!
Rubio has an economic plan that will explode the national debt to over $40 Trillion.
It’s called Rubio’s Citizenship and Welfare Plan for Illegal Aliens.
If he is I won’t be voting for him and I imagine many others will feel the same way.
I’m thinking that also. I support Trump and really hope he makes it but Rubio is very charismatic. Moreso than any of the other candidates running.
GOP Debate 2015: Marco Rubio Defends H1B Visas Amid Criticism And Questions Of Microsoft Support
Adam Ozimek, Contributor
An important issue I and others have written about in the past is that immigration visas do too much to restrict the mobility of immigrants, and they grant employers too much power. There have been a raft of posts criticizing the H1B program, especially in light of EPIâs new report on STEM shortages, but few discussing to what extent the bill would fix the problems with the H1B program. Here is how FAIR, an anti-immigration group, summarizes sec 4103 âEliminating Impediments to Worker Mobilityâ.
â
- Establishes sec. 214(c)(15) the Secretary âshall give deferenceâ to prior approval of H-1B and L Nonimmigrant visas in reviewing a petition to extend the status, unless:
â 1.material error with previously approved petition;
2.substantial change in circumstances;
3.new âmaterial informationâ has been discovered that âadversely impactsâ the eligibility of either the employer or the nonimmigrant; or
4.âin the Secretaryâs discretion, such extension should not be approvedâ
- Establishes section 214(n)(3) granting H-1B worker 60-day transition period to change jobs without losing lawful status (Note: under current law, no grace period to find new petitioning employer)
- Establishes section 221(h)(1)(D) granting the Secretary of State, in consultation with Secretary of DHS, to waive interview requirement for âlow-riskâ visa applicants
The 60 day grace period is an important improvement that essentially means an employer canât kick a worker out of the country by firing them. This wil help increase worker power. In addition, workers who wish to renew their visas will no longer have to leave the country which is another important improvement.
There are plenty of ideas for drastic reforms for worker visas, including region based visas, which I have advocated for. But if weâre going to stay generally within the current format do these reforms do enough to increase worker mobility? What other reforms should be included? Is 60 days long enough? Given the level of complaints we see of H1B visas at this particular moment this is a very uncovered topic.
Another area that is undiscussed is the requirements on firms who wish to hire H1B workers. There were certainly too many of these to start with, and that is only getting worse with this bill. What is the economic theory behind the notion that a âneedâ must be proven for a hire to be economically beneficial? Do we make importers prove that they have done all in their power to buy goods from American firms first? This is silly and too many otherwise economically competent commentators are agreeing that such command and control micromanagement of the labor market is necessary. Iâm not surprised that union-backed think tanks want extensive labor market protectionism, but I am surprised how willing people are to go along with this as if it is economically sensible.
No wall, No future.
I must be immune, Rubio does nothing for me.
Here's some more great Trump news...
Trump leads in New Hampshire by double digits.
Rubio is the “flavor of the month Republican!”
